I think that's pretty sound advice, MacLowlife....

I am just waiting for Grant to get ahold of these two statements. Looks like potential for a LOT of mileage out of them. Hmmm, maybe I should PM him.

Thumbs down Re: Can you fit into clothes you bought 10 years ago?

The old adage applies still, "If you buy quality, you only cry once."

That being said, it really only applies to the items where you care about quality. I have spent a lot of time in gyms... and I always bought the very best that Dollar Tree, Walmart, and Target had to offer. However, for items that I might want to look well and last longer than a few months, if not too extravagant, I will pay more.

This means you won't catch me ever wearing a rolex, where my brietling that costs 1/10th as much won't work. And I wont wear a Casio to an event where things like that would be noticed.

    It's about context.

For example, in the hose thread. I don't plan on wearing $140 patterned hose anywhere other than Tartan day dinners, Burns suppers, etc... but those are the sort of events where those little details are expected and welcome. Games and casual wear, you will likely catch me in some $12 sock dreams hose.

    Context.

That's sage advice for anyone. I, for one, fret and worry and study and whine and research before spending big bucks on stuff. And I, too, have fatboy clothes and less-than-fatboy clothes. So, that accomodates my weight swings.

Of course, David Pope gave the best advice: take care of your weight! But that's another question.

Buying good quality--not necessarily best quality, but certainly good quality--is a pretty good plan overall. I even have kilts in varying sizes, but that's a foolish extravagance that I do not recommend. It would be best to maintain a decent weight for both health and sartorial reasons.

I can now. Lost 35 pounds last year due to diabetes. The ability to shrink back into an old wardrobe has been about the only benefit to the diagnosis. The two kilts that I have now fit better than they did when I bought them. What is really scary is that I slipped on a jungle fatigue jacket last night that I was issued in 1970...and it fits!!

    Other factors on size change.---
As part on my diet control I have kept a daily graph of my weight and natural waist, from age 30 to age 58. Measurements taken in the morning after elimination, both kinds, and before eating or drinking. Most accurate time - spine is uncompressed, food and drink are all gone.

Between rising and going to bed you gain about 5 pounds in water and food, loose a half inch in height - increases girth - all of which causes a gain a half to whole inch in the waist.

During this time I have tried to stay around 145-150 pounds all the data I am looking at is when at 150.

    Observations -
Between 30 and 50 waist my went up 1", then 50-58 another 1". I have very mild osteoperosis. My height is 1/4 inch less than at 30. Doctor says that spinal discs don't reinflate as well overnight as we age.

The other reason is that being less active we loose muscle mass, so a higher percenage of my 150 pound weight is fat - around the middle of course. Something to be said for the adage, "Use it or loose it." Our efficient body won't keep unused muscle mass around.

Seems staying active is the key to staying the same size over the years.

I wonder if there is significant overlap between those who think:

    1. High quality clothing represents a good value.
    2. One should maintain one's "normal adult weight" (~at age 25, age 30?) throughout one's life.
    Maybe
For one, I am a 1 & 2 (although I'm not sure "normal adult weight" should be calculated as ones weight at a specific age)

I graduated high school in the year 2000 and yes I can still wear my khakis and polo shirts from my good old high school years. My kilt from then is a little big but nothing a belt can't fix.
