Compliments at Church

On Sunday I wore my kilt as per usual but with a different flair. Rather than the dress shirt and waist coat I was a little more "punk" as my wife would say and wore steel toe 8" black boots, my album's logo t-shirt, and a cool black belt with a gothic cross on the buckle. I got a lot of nice compliments on the kilt. One guy who hadn't been in in a while asked what the special occasion was and I replied, "I wear it every Sunday". One of the youth group asked if I was Irish and I told him about my Scottish grandmother. He just said, "cool". and many of the young ladies in the teen youth group have said they like it. Even the older folks have complimented me on my attire (when wearing my argyle jacket). This church has been pretty wonderful about things like that. Appearances are not as important as what's inside a person and they love even the "weirdos" like me like family. In central Pennsylvania being welcomed with open arms by the older crowd in spite of being "different" seems rare but this is a wonderful congregation.

A story like that makes my day! I'm so glad that the young ones are learning about the kilt, and that acceptance of differences is being spread.

I do it all the time. Dressing up for church in a suit and tie or even just slacks just isn't me. I don't dress provocatively or in dirty clothes but I also don't present myself in a way that isn't me. I'm usually wearing a Star Wars t-shirt. The cool thing is this church, while firmly rooted in scripture, doesn't pay much attention to the outside of a person in any negative way. It has been wonderful to be around such loving people with a real depth to them. They've been very accepting.

I'm glad you've had such good reactions! I'm hoping to wear a kilt to my church soon as well; we'll see how it goes! I'm a pastor's son though so all eyes are on me; I'm not sure how some of the old timers will take it.

I've worn a kilt for church twice. The comment I got most was "it isn't new year is it".

I hear you on that. In church this Sunday, I had someone shocked that I was wearing p@nts. I guess now that I think about it.... I understand why. It's either a kilt or a sarong. Ironically, I wasn't the unbifurcated guy this weekend, but the pastor's brother (the family is Samoan) came in his lava-lava.

(Apparently I started a trend when we joined this church a few years ago)...

No matter where it is when a youth says cool to me wearing a Kilt, it is the best compliment I have ever had.

though perhaps it's "just not you," I would advise a very conservative beginning. A tie would go a long way toward making sure the old geezers don't think you too bazaar. That's assuming you care what the old geezers think. (I, for one, believe you should, but I am not in charge. . . . I probably should be in charge, but, oh, never mind.)

Church is a good place to find acceptance up to a point, so why not make it easy on yourself, and maybe even your dad. I suspect your point is not to make a point, but to wear the kilt, so--again, for what it's worth coming from an old geezer--why not be conservative to start. You can always dress down later.
