    Confused Taxi Driver ...

We were running a little late yesterday and had to take a taxi to where we were suppose to be. The taxi driver was a talkative one. No sooner than we got in the cab he said 'so whats with the cilt' ... I replied ' I dunno .. do you know something I don't'. He looked really confused then started talking to the wife again, who was in the front.

Yes, it never fails to surprise that some people expect that if we are wearing a kilt we must be doing something special rather than going about our daily business. When I stopped to refuel the car while passing through Callander yesterday, a lady approached me at the pump and asked me "Are you tossing the caber tomorrow?" When I replied no, she said "Well you should be".

So true, cessna! I was at a teaching gig on the coast of Maine last week and as I was driving from Bangor to Rockland I decided to do some antique shopping. Everywhere I stopped people asked if I was going to the "Festival". Apparently there was a celtic festival in Belfast. Everyone was quite amused that I was kilted "just because".

    Your responses are priceless Derek.

I can just picture him scratching his head & trying to figure out just what it is that he knows...

I usually just get "Is there some Scottish thing on today?" They're an imaginative lot round my way!

So many people think that people would only wear kilts on a special occasion or because if they are spotted in a kilt/tourist location that they must be staff.

In Jedburgh I was approached by a member of the public for information about an item they were interested in and at the Wales Tartan Centre stand at the Royal Welsh Show the same thing happened!

Only by more kilt owners wearing them a lot more often can this notion be overcome

I don't understand. Why become irritated with well-meaning people asking innocent questions? It is those of us who wear kilts who are outside the norm, not them.

As Marlon Brando as Don Corleone put it, "This is the life we have chosen."

If I get asked the underwear question I just ask, like I heard Matt suggest, "Do You Really Care?" When I get asked if I am Scottish I say by descent. If I get asked why am I wearing a Kilt, I say because it is comfortable. If I am asked if I play the bagpipes I answer not yet.
