    A Conversation Stopper

Today I was sitting in the Parish Hall after the inter-generational service, sipping a coffee, when a girl of about 12 years came up to me and said (without any prelude),

"Why are you wearing a kilt?" Score one for her, she recognized it as a kilt.

"Because I like to wear the kilt."

"Are you from Scotland?" Score another for her, she realized it's Scottish.

"I have visited Scotland once, but I've never lived there."

A 30- or 40-second pause, then "Are you wearing underpants?"

Gulp. "Why do you think that's an appropriate question?"

"I dunno." Another pause. "Well, are you?"

    "Are you?"

"Yup!" And she pushed the waistband of her slacks down far enough to show the waistband of her panties.

I don't remember what happened next, except that I did not get thrown out of the Parish Hall.

Do the language laws in Quebec really require you to hire a mime who doesn't speak French if you hire one who doesn't speak English? Could a mime who doesn't speak either fill both roles at the same time? (Thanks to Calvin Trillin.)

Isn't there something in the "Boy Scout Motto" that goes something like "Always be prepaired or something like that? Sounds like you were that time!

As a father of a 12 year old lass, I am not surprised by her actions. Good for her for being smart, honest and daring. Scary thing is that what would you have done if she said, "No."

I ALWAYS wear something under my kilt at church. We have a lot of rug rats around and I don't want to scare the children.

I met a somewhat older young lady me (about 19) a while ago (I use the word lady to give her the benefit of the doubt) and, when asked THE QUESTION I responded that as a gentleman I would never ask her the same question. She replied," a thong." And proceeded to unzip her jeans to show me. I managed to walk away from this encounter with her question still unanswered.
