    Corduroy

I was wondering if anyone had a corduroy kilt (Union Kilt, and I think Amerikilt had them offered at one point), or if anyone has made one themselves. I was just wondering how the fabric works when it comes to kilt.

Well, at least it wouldn't make that awful noise when you walk like it does in trousers.

My Irish Tri-Color kilt is a nice, soft brushed corduroy fabric. It has all sorts of sway like a wool, and is quite comfortable on the "back-side". The "grain" of the kilt runs horizontal since you really don't want the pleats to be affected by the material's flow. It presses like a charm, and is easy to clean... if not accept a simple steam press.

The negatives are that it tends to attract dirt like the Jerry Springer Show. Since I only went with a Summer-weight 12 ounce, it tends to play in the breeze. A Winter weight of 16 or more should keep it in check.

I've only made a half dozen of them, but they're easy to sew-up (material wise). You have a LOAD of different weights, widths and colors to choose from... along with any number of suppliers for the fabric.

To this point, the corduroys one of my most requested fabrics.

One thing about working with cord- make sure the 'lines' run along the fabric, not across it, unless you want to be piecing it together as you go along.

My first Pittsburgh Kilt is corduroy. It's tough, it's warm, and it washes well. The only disadvantage I can think of is that it has a good memory -- that is, if you sit down, the kilt will stay sitting when you stand up; potentially embarassing if you're not wearing a sporran. This aspect goes away with time and wear.
