A Curious Conversation

On Sunday, as my wife was working, I went to my local pub for lunch. I wore my Hector Russell Black Stewart along with shirt and lightweight jumper. I went up to the bar and ordered food and beer, and then the barmaid asked " Escuse me asking, but are you Scottish?"
Me "No, I just enjoy wearing a kilt"
BM "Is it comfortable?"
Me "It's very comfortable"
BM "Aren't you cold?"
Me "No, its nice and woolly and warm"
BM "It's made from wool, like from a sheep?"
Me "Yes, real sheep's wool"
BM "It looks nice"
Me "Thankyou"

The barmaid, as with all the bar staff, was wearing black trousers and a dark shirt. It occurred to me from her remarks that this young woman had possibly never worn a skirt, hence the 'cold' and 'comfort' questions. As to the 'like, yannow, sheep' question - that gave me a smile as I sat down with my beer.

Ah, the kilted life. Ain't it fun?

Or, she doesn't wear them in winter.
Or, if she does wear them in winter, she wears tights, and she's not barelegged.

Or, as with many women's skirts, they don't provide ample warmth and yes, you do freeze your bloomers off.

I'm amazed at how many folks have never worn wool. I guess the acryli-beasts have taken over.

I know my wife has a few skirts... none of them are wool, none have near the thickness, warmth, or remotely close to the amount of material in them that my kilt has.

I actually work with a guy who's wife makes skirts. A very heavy skirt for her uses almost one full yard of material. Neither one of them actually believes that my kilt is 8 yards. They think it's impossible. Which is also why they don't believe me when I say I'm usually colder in a pair of jeans.

So, this barmaid's comments are actually not very surprising at all, even if she wears skirts frequently...

I agree, the barmaid's questions don't lead me to think that she's unversed in woman's unbifurcated garments, but that when she wears a skirt, and it's not 60 degrees F or better, she's cold. She's cold because a woman's skirt weighs approx. 8 ounces. My kilt weighs pounds. I'd imagine that a skirt with somewhat bare legs would be very cold in cooler weather.

Or, maybe she just needed an excuse to talk to the handsome Barry wearing a kilt. Happens to me all the time.

Also we wear thick wool hose as well. Something women do not wear. As for softness, I was very surprised how soft the wool actually was. Before wearing a kilt and accessories, I was relegated to thick wool socks and they were itchy uncomfortable things. I guess that's the difference between cheap wool socks and very high quality wool garments.
