Daddy! That man's wearing a skirt!

Sherri and I were shopping at the Safeway yesterday. We were working our way down one of the isles when I hear a child's voice behind me, "Daddy! That man's wearing a skirt!"

I turn and see two girls aged maybe 5 and 6, both pointing in my direction and trying to get their father's attention. Behind them, pushing a shopping cart is their father, turning beet red with embarrassment. The three of them were all wearing blue jeans.

I pointed back at the girls saying, "And you're wearing pants!" At which point the father stepped forward as if to apologize. I smiled at him and said, "I can't win either way, can I?" He smiled back saying, "No, I guess not."

Meanwhile, another couple was observing the action and when I turned back around, the male half of the couple said, "That looks like a utility belt." I replied, "It's a utility kilt." His wife, apparently the more observant of the two told her hubby, "It's a Utilikilt. Says so right there on the label."

The couple nodded and grunted their approval and we all continue on with our shopping.

    Hey Rigged,

Was browsing Tartans by Air last night and noticed that Safeway has a corporate tartan. Wonder what would happen if a Safeway employee wore a Safeway tartan kilt to work??

Can't get it to show here, but you can go to

http://tartans.byair.net/index.php click on S and look on the list for Safeway.

    A nice tartan, actually.

It looks to me like the tartan image is generated similar to the way House of Tartan does it rather than displaying a simple image file.

Hehehehehehe....reminds me of walking home to the subway from jury duty when I heard this woman tell her daughter, "Yes, but that's not a skirt. It's a kilt. Men wear kilts."

I grinned ear to ear for the rest of the day.

When I was on holiday last year, I got "I'm a laydee!" from a 6 or 7 year old girl wearing jeans. The parents laughed like it was funny, and carried on walking. Suppose one of the bad things about being young (20) is people don't seem to care about what they've said to you.

Had a similar experience at the YMCA yesterday. Took the girls upstairs to play on th eindoor maze/jungle gym and was wearing my gray, lined PK (its been below zero the past 2 days). A little girl saw me walk in and I could just tell she was not sure what to make of it. She turned to her Mom and said, that man is wearing a dress. Why? Then she came over and asked me why I was wearing a skirt? I told her it was a kilt and she asked me why I wore it. I said because I liked to. Her mom then explained that while they were not seen often in the US, they were more prevalent in other parts of the world. She then just looked at me while trying to come to grips with the whole concept. I winked at her and said "Kind of wierd, huh?"! This seemed to help her categorize it a bit. She then went to play.

I love the response of and you are wearing pants, and the father apologizing. How often have I heard that sort of dialogue.

It is great to hear the response of the couple that overheard.

Oh yes the joys of walking down the aisle of the grocery store in a Kilt!
