Edinburgh visit and kilt shops

I'm heading to Edinburgh for the day in January. My wife and I got plane tickets from Belfast return £22.00 for the both of us including taxs on EasyJet. I will be kilted of course however my wife has allowed me only one visit to a kilt shop. So who do I go for, any suggestions as to which shop is the best value, range etc. There is a good chance I may get a fitting for a new kilt while I am there. I have thought about a Breacan from Kinloch Anderson in the Kinloch Hunting tartan as I fancy some thing lighter for the summer months which is also more casual.The advantage of the Breacan is that its off the peg.

I think my advice would be for you to head to Geoffrey (Tailor)/21st Century Kilts (yes, as Phil says, I have a few from that 'house' - 16 in all, and another currently on order). They are centrally located at 57/59 High Street, The Royal Mile (next to John Knox's House) and do have some TFCK kilts available off the peg. Kinloch Anderson's breacan is good as a casual kilt (I have four) and, as you say, are only sold off the peg. However, K-A are located out at Leith!

Our sponsors here, KiltStore.net , are located in Edinburgh, but they are an Internet Company and have no facilities for personal callers, but they have an amazing range of kilts listed!

Have a great day in that fabulous city - I am jealous although I was there for a long weekend back in September and may be visiting again in the next couple of months!

I went to Kinlock Anderson up on Commercial Street when I was Edinburgh last July. They're up on the northern edge of the city, by the river.

They have a showroom and easy parking in their compound. They measured me for my Montrose and diced hose, had everything else in stock, and sent it all to me in the states when the jacket was done. No complaints here.

I would have liked exploring the Royal Mile that day, but it was pouring rain all day.

I also visited Kinloch-Anderson earlier this year hoping to pick up a Breacon off the peg (I just hate the 'jonesing'). Sadly I found the sales assistant less than helpful. They had only a very limited selection ready-made with nothing at all in my size, 36", which I would not consider an unusual size. Afraid I left empty handed.

I obtained my Breacans from K-A by mail order five years ago, when things might have been different! Last September, I took a special trip out to their Showrooms from central Edinburgh, only to find both their shop and museum closed! Admittedly it was on a Sunday, but all retail outlets and tourist exhibits are open on Sundays nowadays, and I could not have been more disappointed. Later I wrote to the Managing Director about this as there is nothing in their advertising and promotional material stating their opening hours, but I received no reply.

To be fair, when I mentioned this to Adele at our sponsors, KiltStore.net, she contacted the MD (whom she knows well) and he has agreed to give me a personally conducted tour on my next visit to Edinburgh. However, there is still no news on their opening hours!

I have to say I'd go for a TFCK, and when I mentione to Hamish, once, that I can get a ticket to Edinburgh for about £2.50 and a return for £1.50 I thought his head would explode

after he'd finished going green of course.
It normally costs about £49 (taxes

) for both myself and Sarah to get to Edinburgh and back home.

The only kilt store in Edinburgh I have visted is Geoffrey (Tailor). This was before i owned a kilt and before I knew much about them. The store is large and impressive though. Located at the top of the Royal Mile, near the entrance to the castle.

I would recommend this store as others have done.

With respect, that location is a branch of Geoffrey (Tailor) within their Edinburgh Weaving Mill building, not the Headquarters shop which is at 57/59 High Street (about half-way along the Royal Mile). The latter is where the serious kilt-wearer will shop - the Weaving Mill branch is somewhat tourist orientated, although they do have quality merchandise there also, of course. Additionally, Howie is shortly to open his own exclusively "TFCK" shop in the basement of the Geoffrey (Tailor) HQ in the High Street.
