    An experience at work...

So, to preface, I work at Macy's in the shoe department.

Yesterday a gentleman and his wife came in to find some black shoes for the husband. He came over with a standard black shoe, and asked for his size in the shoe. I told him I'd go see if we had it, and was about to walk away, when he said "Yeah, I'm going to be in a scottish-themed wedding, so I need a shoe to wear with a dress." He said this jokingly, and his wife kind of looked at him oddly, then said "Honey! It's a skirt, not a dress" to which he responds "Yeah, sorry, a skirt."

So I just laugh along initially, then went up and grabbed the shoe for him. When I came back downstairs, he made the comment that he wasn't really sure what type of shoe he needed, as the groom had told him to get 'brogues.' So from there I mentioned my association with kilts, and went on to have a good 20 minute or so conversation about kilts and other scottish-related things.

After he got passed the initial "eh, yeah I'm wearing a skirt" with me, he then got all excited about it. "Yeah, we're going to be all dressed up with the whole gig. We're going to be packing knives and everything, man!"

It was great to hear someone who doesn't normally wear a kilt so excited about doing so.

I'll bet he will want one of his own to wear regularly after the wedding.

Cowards die many times before their deaths; the valiant never taste of death but once. Of all the wonders I yet have heard, it seems to me most strange that men should fear; seeing that death, a necessary end, will come when it will come. --William Shakespeare, Julius Caesar

This line of thinking may seem a bit simplistic / puerile, but I think very prevalent. In other words, there are a lot more of them than there are of us. Sometimes it drives us crazy.... but we gotta stay cool. You handled it well.

Not sure I agree with you here, I have made numerous jokes about buying a dress that I am only wearing once. Yet the truth is I am busy thinking of ways to wear them more often. Based on his 'we’re going to be packing knives' comment I thought he was looking forward to it.

Yes, he did get his shoes, and he did indeed seem very excited about it. It just came across to me as though he was kind of nervous to confess that he would be wearing a 'skirt' at first, as though he thought I was going to react negatively.

After I responded positively, he seemed to show more enthusiasm about it all.

I'm sur he'll ask for duplicate copies of the wedding pictures for his family album once he realizes how sharp he looks in his "Skirt".
