    First cool-weather hike

So with the thermometer t 39 F this morning I decided it was high time that I air out the wool hiking kilt and take the dog for some exercise on our local trails. My youngest son (who just joined the forum, btw) came along to break in his brand new boots.

It looks much warmer in the picture.

Make sure you look toward Mitchell and the other high peaks and see the snow laying in the hollers. I could see it from I-40 in McDowell Co. today.

Great pic, by the way. I always enjoy the ones you post.

Very nice! I did something similar last weekend- my first cold weather outing of the year. I took the family to a pumpkin chunkin'. It never broke 20F... and it snowed and was windy. Man, the wind was just biting! The only part of me that was actually warm was the kilted part! So- how is the knee doing?

The knee is doing great. Thanks for asking! I use a brace only when I'm toting a full pack or wielding a chainsaw on uneven ground. These cold mornings make it ache a bit, but that is to be expected, I suppose.

That dog never misses a thing. He was probably eying a squirrel...his passion is to chase tree rats.

And funny you should mention that, dbh. We stopped on a hillside with a splendid western view and could see all the way over to Pisgah and the Balsam range...solid white with rhyme ice.

Glad the knee is working better. Great pic of you and the younger.

We did a little hiking on Grandfather Mountain over the weekend. It was pretty chilly, and very windy. We saw a couple kilted hikers. Word of caution, wear a heavy kilt in high winds, please! :-)

Well, Dirka, now that you've moved to the Great North State, you must come up to Asheville for some hiking and brewery touring!
