Forbidden to wear a kilt for Nostalgia Day

My son, D'Argo, and Prestor John's son, (herein called Ryjel, but he hates it) asked their highschool vice principal if they could wear kilts tomorrow for Nostalgia Day, where the students are encouraged to dress in historical costume.

The VP said, according to D'Argo, "No, for the obvious reasons."

D'Argo and Ryjel think we need an X Marks the Scot petition to change the VP's mind.

How would I go about doing this?

    Kizmet, still a kilted mother.

Exactly what were the obvious reasons? Did the VP elaborate?

The obvious question is what are the females at the school allowed to wear?

I quoted what the boys were told. In other words, he either didn't want to say or didn't have a good reason off the top of his head.

Why did they even ask? If they were told to wear historical dress then they can wear historical dress.

The answer to "obvious reasons" is, "The VP is an idiot."

As for an X-Marks petition, it is probably too late (since the event is tomorrow), but I'm sure that quite a few of us would send e-mails if we had the address.

On the other hand, I think they should still go to shcool, and if asked to leave Prestor John should show up to collect them. Maybe the VP can explain to a priest why kilts should not be worn.

    D'argo: His reasons.

"Boys shouldn't be wearing that type of thing." When told it was men's apparel he said "only in scotland"

    Huh?

First our kids can't wear patriotic clothing in the schools and now this.....

Just what do they consider "Nostalgia"? Although I don't like to hear the kilt called a "costume", just what reason could anyone have to forbid the wearing of a family tartan.....Lord knows us CLAN members have not been thought of as "gangs" for hundreds of years (Ugh, the MacFarlane's past always haunts us..LOL)...I would love to hear the VP's explination before we let loose the wrath of Clansmen (& women) worldwide.....

D'argo: Nostlagia Day means that we are supposed to wear clothing from some period of history.

Boy is that bird an idiot....how's he survive in academia?

Wondering if they'd "just done it" if they'd not have had raves at their "historical" dress.

If it were my boy I'd be looking for a new school where the educators knew something about history.

    Kizmet,

    My suggestion.

Call the principal. Explain that your son and his friend were instructed by his vice principal that kilts are not appropriate historical dress. Ask he he could explain exactly what type of historical dress would be appropriate? Would a student of Japanese descent be told that a kimono was inappropriate?

Stay cool, stay calm, and most of all be very polite. But go to where the buck stops and ask (as a Scottish American) for a definition of appropriate "Historic dress".

    Best of Luck
