It certainly
can be part of a dance, but it isn't required at all.
Think for a moment of an all male set for the very boisterous "Reel of the 51st Division". There is going a lot of energy and fun (even raised arms!
) , but there won't be flirting between the dancers.
Do I sometimes flirt with other dancers in a set? Of course! But it depends who I happen to be dancing with. The same goes for humor in a dance (of which there can be a lot
).
It all depends on the set
Dance is so wonderful and joyous, it is a very rich experience and it would be a shame to limit it by always having to put it in a sexual context.
