The genetics of Scots

My Daltonism is giving me fits looking at various tartans, hose and flashes.

It's an inherited disability and I know for a fact it did not come from my patrilineal line.

It's an x chromosome disorder that can only come from the distaff side.

I saw your thead and have to admit I did not understand the terms until I put my Google finger to work. I don't think I have a lot to offer except that I think my colour vision is fine and I am of nearly 100% Scottish ancestory. However, we have noted that my elder son is quite colour blind. My wife, his mother, is of German/USA UEL backgroud.

Not very scientific and I doubt it helps much.

I would suggest you find someone you trust to interpret for you, much as I do with French at work.

I wondered how long it would be before someone googled it. Yep, I'm mildly red/green color deficient inherited from my mother who is an unaffected carrier of the recessive gene that she inherited from her affected father's x chromosome. The same will repeat with my own daughter to her sons but not her daughters and of course should I have a son it will end there as I can not pass the gene on my y chromosome.

Seriously though between my being unsure of what I am actually seeing in the range of reds, purples, certain shades of blues like teal or aqua and greens combined with the myriad of patterns, checks and blends inherit in scottish fabrics I just know I shall appear in public garishly mismatched.
Maybe I should stick to saxon apparel where a navy suit, white shirt, red tie and black shoes are the safe bet.

My maternal line is where my Scots ancestry comes from... and both of my uncles were color blind, blue/purple.

I have a hard time with some blues and greens, but if I really focus I can tell the difference so I'm pretty sure I'm not colorblind, just hypochondria.

I once knew a gentleman who was totally blind.

He lived alone, but functioned as well as any sighted person. He was always well dressed. In general, he had two colourways - blue/gray and earthtones. His secret was buttons sewn into his clothing. If it had a button sewn in, it was part of his blue/gray range - no button it was part of earthtones.

I believe his sister vetted his clothing, especially after Christmas and birthdays, to make sure buttons were sewn in or not.

Yup. Red/Green deficient here. Male R/G is said to be the most common of all colour deficiencies.
