Good night out

Had the chance to got to an auction fundraiser for our son's Waldorf school, and went in the kilt as I did last year (MacEwan Ancient family tartan, black barathea coat/vest, white shirt, necktie, black monk strap shoes, ancient scot argyl top hose, semi-dress bobcat Thorfinn - evening but not a formalwear event). I was amazed at how people are starting to associate me with it now. I had lots of great comments and several regulars who said they were looking forward to seeing what I would wear because they thought I was one of the best dressed guys there last year! It's nice to see attitudes turn away from bewilderment to a more mature understanding and realization that it's not an oddity, but a way of expressing pride in heritage as well as oneself. So many men don't dare to put forth the extra effort to present themselves well. Sure, you can choose to wear the kilt in a slovenly fashion, but if you don't it really shows that you have put thought and effort into your appearance. You of course can do this no matter what you put on, but the kilt really brings it out in a wonderful way.

I had that happen again a few weeks ago when we went to a friends home for a wine tasting party (he owns a restaraunt). I walked in and immediately had a young pretty blond give me one of those head to toe look-overs, with a wry smile on her face (naughty girl!) Turned out it was the wife of my hosts son! He had apparently been going over the guestlist earlier with his father and asked if I would be wearing the kilt. Ken's answer was "Of course!"

Anyway, great night. Met a fellow from Glasgow last night, who seemed pretty stunned to see an American in a kilt. His first question was "Are you from Scotland!?" We had a nice chat about family names, etc. I am always taken aback when native Scots in America come rushing over to chat, as they are so amazed to see someone in a kilt here. I had that happen in Chicago once too. Fellow crossed Millenium Park to come over and say hello. He was visiting from Edinborough.

Anyway, great night! I'm done rambling. Everyone have a terrific Saturday!

Thumbs up

I had a similar experience at a local Irish pub. A gentlemen, obviously from the UK judging by accent, questioned me for several minutes while we waited in line for the loo. He was very polite but surprised. He asked so many questions and got me so worked up talking about my newly acquired kilt that I didn't get to ask him where he was from exactly.
