My guess is, we'd all be lacking wits or a pair of steel toes to back them up . All the "friendly" remarks just keep us on our game...

Methinks you "a lucky guy."

I'm thin-skinned and ordinarily easy to upset in some manners.
In the matter of kilt wearing I've seemingly been thick-skinned and appreciative of any attention cast my way.

I've been gently schooled by a stranger in the proper way to walk, put-on and sit while wearing the kilt.
To those, I've said "Thank you."

I have said, "But I notice you are not wearing your kilt."

"Don't own one," was a reply.

"Really?" says I.

Conversations trail off into nowhere after that!

I was talking to a gentleman in Waterstones the other day, he stopped me to ask what tartan my kilt was (Black Stewart) and we got chatting but when I told him I wasn’t a Stewart he wasn’t impressed to say the least. He actually turned round and asked what I was! Fortunately it was but the work of a minute to educate the afore mentioned gentleman that I have several kilts and that my cooper one was with a seamstress to see if she would be able to adjust my kilt for me and even then I can wear what I like.

On a related note I’ve also had someone come up to me and say I don’t look Scottish which I found funny.

Ha! Reminds me of an old joke. Two space aliens meet on the street and one says to the other,

"Hello. My name is 3246530124881. How are you?"

The other says, "Pleased to meet you. I am 294022274920055."

The first alien replies, "Funny... You don't LOOK Jewish."

I think this is a good time to repeat a story about what I did with an extremely rude girl in the grocery store about a year ago.

She was blabbing on her cell phone, totally oblvious to the fact that she was practically screaming and half the store could hear her.

I walked in and got a cart. A few moments later she spotted me and she shrieked into her cell phone...."oh my GOD...this guy just walked into the store in a kilt! That is so GAY."

So I walked up to her, quite directly, and grabbed her cell phone. I put it up to my head and bellowed.....

" Oh My God, there's this nasty girl in the store and she is so RUDE."

...and handed back her phone.....and carried on with my shopping.

......now that is a story that should be told more often. (and should probably be re-lived more often as well)

Nice one, Alan!

Indeed, how do you look Scottish? I am also one-eighth Scottish. Not sure what my Scottish great-grandfather looked like.
I often feel that my beard makes me look Scottish. But my regimental sergeant-major once kicked me off a parade because of it (I had permission to be bearded, and I was kilted that day).

Drac, I once knew a woman surnamed Lamont who insisted on pronouncing it the French way (la Mont). I knew no better at the time, but I read much later that the name was of Norwegian origin, means “lawman”, and is supposed to be pronounced as Lamb’nt.
But if you use the French pronunciation, that is not something I should pick you out about. I have enough problems with my own surname ;-)
Regards,
Mike

Lesson learned: make sure you have your face painted blue and your whacking great sword with you whilst wearing the kilt, to ensure that "Scottish" look...

Ever been told you don't sound Scottish? I get that here in the States a great deal. In fairness, I've been away from home a long time. And, I have to admit that I do get a bit impatient sometimes with the "expertise" of total strangers who are "more Scottish than thou." I oft have to restrain myself from reviving that auld tradition of the Glesga kiss.

Ive been told I dont sound like an Aberdonian, which to be honest doesnt bother me that much

I dont think it would be apreciated if I tried to go shopping with a blue face and whacking great big sword for some reason I cant think why though.
