I made Howard's kilt in the modern Smith tartan, 16 oz Lochcarron Strome cloth, box pleated to alternate stripes. The neat thing about his kilt is that Howard provided his own buckles, as he's somewhat of an artist with metal himself. The blue color of the buckles he provided tones wonderfully with the tartan. Maybe he can share some pictures with everyone.

In any case, I'm very glad you are so pleased Howard!

I will get to pictures, I promise. But yesterday I was simply waaay to sweaty and dirty to be modeling a new kilt for the camera. And already today this is the case again, I am afraid. Work to pay for such things comes before play time on the computer. (i.e., I am slow with photoshop and uploading the pics to the web site, etc.). Only in the house to have breakfast with my wife and kids, then back to work.

The buckles are made from pattern welded steel that I had lying about left over from some sword fittings project long ago. Not high contrast materials, but since I am a smith, it seemed appropriate to have smith made buckles.

I might have to do it again with the weathered colors, and maybe pleated to the blue stripe. Hmmnn.... ;)

Is that the "Matt Newsome 4 yard box pleated" slippery slope, or just kilts in general, Harlan ? If it is the latter to which you refer, it is too late already. Last September I bought an inexpensive philabeg at the ren faire in Des Moines on a whim. Now I'm at 15 and counting, and the new one from Matt is certainly the best of the lot, by a WIDE margin.

Except for kilts to wear in the shop for work, I am done making them, opting instead just to send the money to Matt for the "nice" kilts to wear out in public. I had two that made which I thought were pretty nice until yesterday. My bubble has been popped. I am not even worthy of "amateur" kitmaker as a moniker. I think I'll stick with swords and metal stuff. ;)

I'll try to get pictures together tomorrow (maybe today, but it seems unlikely).
