A Great Photo of My Kilted G-G Grandfather

Although I have always been very conscious of my Scottish ancestry, as a first generation American I have always wondered who were my direct ancestors anyway, and where did they live, and what did they do? It didn't take me long to discover that each Uncle, Aunt and Cousin had a different version of the same story, and different recollections as to the names and relationships of various family members beyond the most recent generations.

I always knew my immediate family was from Kinning Park in Glasgow, but that was about the only fact I had. So, needless to say I caught the genealogy bug and thanks to technology and credit cards, have a proven family history that works backwards from my parents coming to Philadelphia, to my grandfather's birth in Kinning Park, to my G-Grandfather in Perth and my G-G Grandfather who was a PC in Tillicoultry to my G-G-G Grandfather John Mackay's birth in Aberdeen.

Along the way one of the relatives dug up this picture. It is of my G-G Grandfather William Robinson from about 1900, who family history has it, was a member of the Black Watch. I know it is a stretch, but could this be a Black Watch kilt he is wearing? And if I enlarge the photo, it sure looks like a Black Watch Glengarry badge to me. I also love the watch chain and fob, very classy.

To see the pic properly, you'll want to put it up to the mirror as it was printed backwards. Cool pic! I also had to destroy some family legends when genealogical research proved otherwise.

Very nice be careful geneology can be almost as addictive as kilts.

Thanks! I had no idea! I fixed it so that it displays properly.

    What a treasure!

And I'll verify the addictive properties of genealogy...but priceless.

Once I had a large rack of ancestors I printed up the information and sent copies to every sibling, cousin, niece and nephew I could find. Figured if I put enough copies out there someone would save at least one and some day, a few generations down the line, save someone else a lot of work.

Much gratitude for my ancestors who documented their genealogy in letters and even books.

Hope you ID the tartan...would be a thrill to have a kilt in the same tartan.

I never get tired of looking at photos, and old ones of family are right at the top. You're fortunate to have such a photo.
