    haggis, ye say?

    Greetings,

    Desperately seeking haggis. We have a small Burns supper at our house the Friday (22 January). It is always a struggle locating a wee haggis for the festivities. Any local purveyors of haggis in the CT/RI area? We live in Mystic, CT.

    I recommend that you consider making your own haggis. It's not hard although you must invest time. A good recipe is here:

    You may have to substitute a baking bag for the stomach. I never was able to even order a sheep's stomach. And you can use chicken livers and gizzards to good effect. Just be sure to use some lamb as well. And be sure to use real Scottish oats. The rest is easy.

    Another option is this canned haggis from Caledonaian Kitchens. You can get it from the Tartan Museum, and I heartily recommend it. I tried it (a few times) at the Stone Mountain Games until Matt's wife ran me off.

    I have used the canned haggis to indoctrinate my kids in the greatness that is haggis. I tricked them by making golf ball sized rounds out of it, battering it with a stout batter, and fryin them. Add on a little Drambui sauce and the rest is history.

    Caledonia Kitchen either directly or through the Tartan Museum is the way to go( all Jim's choices are good but I recommend the sirloin or lamb) and I too have used a baking bag many of times to fake the stomach.

    Making it is fun but time consuming and a bit of work. I wouldn't do it the day of the event until you have practiced a few times. We use the canned stuff because the hotel we use for the dinner is finnicky about bringing food in.

    Funny you all should be talking of haggis....

    I'm currently taking a look at Star Trek Online, a new MMPRPG that's in open beta right now and one of the food vendors sells a galaxy's worth of exotic food. From rok blood pie, to Neelix's worm crust pie, to raktagino, to Earl Grey tea, to HAGGIS!

    Just think, of it, haggis is now influencing a world wide online game! Thanks Mr. Scott!

    A Glaswegian mate of mine turned me on to the deep-fried haggis love. I buy haggis slices, beer batter and fry until golden.

    He says they eat them with chips, or in a bun like a burger. Only thing is he told me that they refer to it as "scabby dick".
