If you can remember the '70s, you weren't really there, ha.

I was wearing a kilt out and about in Canada in the '70s. I was married wearing my McGregor in '77, so it's up to you. Keep a straight face, nobody can really challenge you on it. Heck, in the early '70s a lot of people weren't wearing anything at all: Mama Lion, Grace Slick, Jim Morrison. So it gets even scarier, remind them of that and they'll welcome the cilt.

Kilts never really caught on in the 70's, not like platform shoes, big collar shirts, kipper ties and bell-bottom trousers (and that was just the women - only joking). If you wore a kilt in the 70's it would have looked like this -
Kenneth McKellar and the Alexander Brothers were big then.

Maybe a Bay City Rollers tartan scarf...
Perhaps just a humungous bow tie, or something velvet or silk.

Back in the seventies I always wore an arran jersey with my kilt, but then I was only 4.

Right, any velveteen doublet would probably do.

Better still, carry a bass guitar: you can be Alan Gorrie of the Average White Band! See this thread... Apparently the Youtube video is not available any more It showed Alan playing in a kilt and either a PC or doublet (I forget which) during a tour of Japan, doing the classic AWB hit "Pick up the pieces."

Most folks, when they say the seventies, are really thinking disco era. You know, polyester leisure suits, chains, afros, etc. Actually, the folks from the early seventies would probably appreciate the comfort of the kilt. Of course, they wouldn't have a traditional one, because it would be too expensive, but they would probably like the colors of the tartan.

Derek, just get yourself an afro wig and wear that with your kilt.
Lose something valuable to you and don't know who can help?
