I was just tooling around in the articles section of this site and came across Elijah's casual kilt guide. In there was a link to the Hilt- a hemp fiber kilt. Having never heard of these before I was wondering if anyone here has one and if so what the impressions are. The maroon looks pretty cool.

Personally, the fabric kind of reminds me of a womens skirt though.

Thanks, but my search revealed nothing in the archives about the product nor the customer service. There was very interesting discussion on commerce and the history of the legality of hemp products. By the way Steve, I didn't realize you too make a maroon kilt, your kilt looks great. Might just have to contact you when the tax refund check comes in.

Don't know about the customer service at the Hilt company but if you tried to smoke the type of hemp used in the production of cloth all you would get was a really bad headache...it's grown for the fiber and not the THC content. I've been working on using hemp oil as a medium for painting and you can buy the stuff by the quart with no legal ramifications (though it is relatively expensive compared to linseed oil or walnut oil).

The hemp fabric folks seem to relish the "reefer" connotation that their product has...guess it appeals to some people and thus sells a lot of product.

...by the way...it's a historical fact that George Washington grew hemp at Mount Vernon....so if you're implying that the Father of my Country was a pot-head, I'll have to ask you to step outside.....how would one would step outside of an internet forum?

Yet again an example of the wealth of knowledge and interests of those who wear the kilt and frequent this board. Where else could you have gotten information on hemp as a medium for painting in the same thread as chaep kilts made from hemp? And I mean this sincerely, not as a jibe. It is wonderful what we can find and talk about on this board.

It has a consisitency much like walnut oil, which I've been using lately. Thus the economy of using the hemp just isn't there...I found an industrial paint manufacturer's website where they showed hemp oil based house paint in their inventory...didn't bookmark it or I'd provide the link. Linseed and walnut and a few others dry much more quickly than hemp oil so, in my book, hemp doesn't have a whole lot going for it...costly and slow drying and not generally available...an interesting sietrip but ultimately not worth it.

I don't know if it could be converted to the consistency of stand oil...which is, for those not familiar with it, just linseed oil that's been heated to something like 500 degrees while it's in a vacuum chamber...it polymerizes and has a greater viscosity than plain linseed oil.

But to put my cynical wiseguy act aside, I have heard that hemp fabric is soft, durable and great for some folks with sensitivities...while I've never had the pleasure, I have heard that once you wear a shirt made of hemp everything else feels coarse by comparison. (desperately trying to drag thread back toward on-topic and apologizing abjectly for going OT in the first place)
