| | | Hogmanay in Edinburgh 2009/2010
I wonder if any other X-Markers are going to be in Edinburgh for Hogmanay this coming week?
I'll be there in my Hunting Fraser kilt along with my two 18 year-old daughters. Their mum's back is playing up, so she'll be staying at home south of the border with our youngest son.
We'll probably be in the Old Town from around teatime/early evening doing the rounds of pubs like The Scotman's Lounge on Cockburn Street (great live fiddle music) and Deacon Brodies etc. My daughters, now old enough to drink. want to pop into Finnegan's Wake, though I told them there'd no doubt be a long queue. I might just leave them there and head down the cobbled street to the Grassmarket.
So, if anybody wants to meet up for a handshake and a drink (no alcohol for me this year, unfortunately, as I'm driving back in the wee, small hours), let me know where you'll be!

Edinburgh on Hogmanay night isn't something I would choose to do - too much drunkenness.
Though I should be down your direction on New Year's Day, weather permitting, I will probably go to Stanhope for Ne'erday lunch as I have done the past two years.

Aye, the Tron Kirk and the North Bridge for the fireworks! We'll be there alright!

For all the alcohol, I've always found it pretty good natured when I've been in the capital for Hogmanay. As it is, this year I'll be sober, apart from one pint of 80/- or a malt when I first arrive. After that it'll be fruit juices or coke. We'll probably be heading south around 3-4 o'clock once the club my daughters are going to with friends chucks out. I'll be the lonely guy in a pub corner after midnight.
Did I say lonely! Heck, I'm a guy in a kilt in Edinburgh over Hogmanay! I'm sure I'll be good company!

Darn... I was just in Edinburgh for St. Andrew's Day -wearing my ancient Fraser Hunting tartan.
I didn't see the fireworks at Edinburgh Castle, because I was at a reception at Scottish Parliament for the exhibit "This Is Who We Are: Scots in Canada" with Alex Salmond and Alex Fergusson.
My first trip to Scotland... and of the few kilt wearers I met - 2 people were on X Marks the Scot.
I plan to Return to Scotland for May 2011.

Sadly, I will not be there. I have not been able to visit Scotland yet, and I had hoped that I might be able to take leave for two weeks this year to visit and enjoy some good times celebrating the new year, but due to the way things worked out, it is not to be. I think I might be able to make it to next year's Hogmanay though!

Bruce. I'd love to join you but... I'd actually discussed this with my boys (21 & 18) as a New Years eve option but unfortunately work re-jigged the rota so I'll be spending new year and the following week on one of these. (Not this particular one you understand) In fact [looks out of window at the vast expanse of sea] Blimey! I'm already here!
I'll toast you with my orange squash at midnight if I'm still up and don't opt for an early night.

Well, guys, maybe next year, though more likely the year after as us nurses tend to work Christmas one year and Hogmanay the next!
I'll be thinking of you all!
Now, before I go iron my kilt in preparation for tomorrow, shall I open my bottle of Talisker, or my bottle of Ardbeg? Decisions, decisions!

Well, me and my two daughters had a great time in the capital! The girls enjoyed the live bands on the street party and I spent most of the night in Deacon Brodies chatting to South Africans, Australians, a Kiwi or three, some Spaniards and three beautiful Italian ladies who kissed me over and over when the fireworks were going off! I'm sure my kilt had nothing to do with their amourous advances - teehee!
Mind, the hour and a half drive home took 4 1/2 hours as I battled though ten inches of snow in a 100 mile long blizzard on the A1! Got home at 05.30.
Happy 2010, folks!

I'm glad to hear that you survived the snow.
Down here in Poole we have not had one flake whilst only a short distance away there were snowmen and closed schools before Christmas, with more snow falling since.
I supose I should be grateful for clear sunny skies and being able to go out to the dustbin in a tee shirt, but I still feel deprived.
I sat up and heard the ships' sirens in the harbour, and the fireworks, at midnight, and mixed up some Lamb's navy rum with coke to toast the New Year.
