Identifying a kilt jacket!!
I was looking at the thread on "Prince Charles Duke of Rothesay in kilt photos" and the gentleman talking to the Duke of Rothesay in these pictures caught my interest, or more precisely his jacket. Can anyone tell me what kind of jacket this is and where one can aquire such a jacket?

I can't remember his name but if I am not mistaken the jacket is bespoke. I only have ever seen two others with jackets like this and that was Lord Raymond Morris of Balgonie and his son Stuart Morris. They have daywear and formal versions of this type of jacket.

Re: Identifying a kilt jacket!!
I'm sorry, I can't help with the jacket info, but I have always liked the look as well. Those photos (in the HRH thread) inspired me to try a tartan waistcoat with tweed day jacket, something I hadn't seen done prior to those photos. Before that, I had only seen them worn as formal evening wear. However, that may be the result of my very limited exposure to Highland wear.
Good luck with your inquiry, I'm sure someone will pipe in with info more pertinent to your question in just a bit
Edit: Sorry Harold, you beat me to the post!

somewhere there was a discussion about this jacket, ages ago, and the consensus was it was a special ,made to order one, but one which divided the members, some loved it (myself included) and others didn't! - so nothting new then!

The gentleman in which you speak of is Lord James (Jamie) William Stuart Whitemore Sempill, 21st Lord Sempill (hence his 3 tall feathers), as well as the chief organiser of The 2009 Gathering in Edinburgh. He pretty much 'spear-headed' the operation. iIve always thought the jacket was interesting, but a wee bit boring to my eye. It reminds me of a men's car coat.
Cheers,

I think it works well on multiple levels of formality depending on the fabric that is used. I personally would like to have one in a nice tweed, a good quality solid color wool, and maybe a velvet one for formal wear.
Daywear.

A little more formal.

Fully formal!

I think that is exactly the difference Kyle, it is a coat vs. a jacket, which I/we tend to see much more often. It seems a practical bit of outerwear, given the weather in Scotland.
I think the thing that first struck, and impressed, me about the photo was his choice to be quite different from the crowd (and the gentleman he would be photographed next to all day) while still being, what I think, quite well turned out.

The gent on the far right, in the white hose taking a photo, is also wearing a coat with his kilt - but Ahhhh the difference between the tweed and modern synthetic fabrics.
I really like Lord James' turnout for the occasion.

With the exception of the cuff style, or perhaps not, I could see myself wearing this coat on a daily basis with trousers even. I had a brushed wool coat that looked similar in shape and cut ages ago that was extremely serviceable.

Re: Identifying a kilt jacket!!
I spoke to Stuart and this is what he said
"The ones that we wear for weddings are a modern take on a simple 18th century style. I sometimes wear a proper 18th c jacket and a thinking about getting another one or two done in tartan."
He is going to try and get me pictures of the 18th century jacket and when he does I will post them as well.
