If I were a knife pleat...I would face...

So the other day I had an individual walk up to me and ask if I was wearing my kilt inside out. I laughed, told him no and asked him why he'd ask such a random question. "You're making a statement with your kilt," he said. Well..it's a kilt. "No," he said, "You're pleats are facing left...and that's a trait of a very particular community."

Long story short, he informed me that the homosexual community wears kilts with pleats facing left. I had never heard this, and frankly the direction of my knife pleats was something I hadn't really even thought of. The kilt was a gift...but if it's saying something it shouldn't, I'd like to be aware of it.

So, knowledgeable rabble, was this gentleman off his rocker, or is there some truth to what he says? Thanks!

    David

I would say he is talking an absolute load of rubbish.

I do know that ladies kilts aprons connect the opposite way but am not certain if the pleats do and in any case they are sometimes all the way around. Nothing whatsoever to do with sexuality.

But gay men who love kilts definitely wear them with the pleats the same as anyone else. There are different varieties of pleating to begin with - I expect he is a total ignoramus of this fact also.

There is a type of pleating known as the Kingussie that has half the pleats going one way and half the other but this is nothing whatsoever to do with matters of sexuality.

I've heard mention on this board of making kilts with left-facing pleats because they don't get as rumpled when you enter/drive a U.S. vehicle (driver on the left). So if somebody accosts you again as to your pleat direction, simply explain that in the UK kilts are made for driving on the right!

Kingussie pleats go both ways. So do box pleats now that I think of it.

Which pleats should you wear if you're a virgin?

Honestly, that is the most rediculous thing I've heard. Thanks for sharing that one, and I believe you have met a truly ignorant fool. People make up the silliest things.

Without going to my closet, don't the knife pleats "face" the right anyway? I sweep them towards the right....I think. So, then, what even was he talking about?

oh come now xman, you are just being silly

Can you even imagine how expensive kilting would be if we had to change our pleats to establish our current stages of life!? Good gracious, I can't even affordable the few kilts I want, let alone change the pleat stylings....

    Fantastic!

Ok, Ok, I think I've got it.

    Left facing: Homosexual
    Right facing: Heterosexual
    Kingussie: Bisexual
    Box pleat: Asexual
    Double box pleat: Very asexual
    Military pleat: Don't ask Don't tell ?

I'm going to sleep a lot better having worked that out!

So how do we change the interpretation of military pleats following the repeal of the DADT policy? (Note: this is a joke, NOT political commentary)
