Inexpensive Tartan Material

For anyone interested.........I have been searching the online fabric stores trying to find inexpensive fabric in wool or a wool blend, because I want a solid green kilt, and can't find one anywhere. In my search, I found a store in Canada that sells a tartan fabric that is 65% polyester and 35% combed cotton, at $ 11.98 per yard. They have some tartans in stock and can special order a list of limited other tartans, at a minimum of 15 yards at $9.98 per yard. Just so happened, they have my tartan on the list of special ordered tartans. In other words, I can buy my tartan at $9.98 per yard but have to buy a minimum of 15 yards. If, I do, I will have a great kilt made.

I am not rich by no means and just can't afford to buy from a Scottish store. I can have sportkilt.com make me a kilt for $ 98.00 if I supply the material.
Does anyone know anything about Amerikilts.com ? They are listed, but, I can't seem to get any reply from them whenever I try to contact them. They have on their website a green kilt for under $100.00. But since I have apparently been ripped off by over $300.00 from clansmanknitwear, I will not do business with anyone anymore who will not reply to emails or phone calls when I try to get information concerning their products. Clansman said it would take 8 to 12 weeks to get my order. Honestly, if I don't have my order in my hands, by the 31st of this month, I will report them to my bank as being a fraudulent buisiness.

I hate to tell you this, but this company is onfamous for taking money and not providing. Google their name and you'll see what I'm talking about. I have even seen the Better Business Bureau's report on them and it had something like 50 such complaints......You'll cringe when you read this-

Check out StillWater Kilts. Jerry has a solid green shadow tartan offered. Your size may not be in stock but give him a call.

Cotton is altogether unsuitable for kiltmaking IMHO.

A good wool or PV will hold a crease and last much longer.

if you really want something cheap you can get Canadian tartans in cheap polyviscose (PV) from a place in Canada.

I made a kilt out of it but it really isn't that great. (worlds better than cotton flannel tartan though...)

I'm glad you all told me this before I made a purchase.
Since I started this thread, I have been to stillwater and others and have found green kilts. However, I have already bought some green material from a local fabric store and have sent it to sportkilts. They will make me a solid green kilt with the Irish National tartan for the inside of the pleats......think it will be sharp looking. I have done buisiness with sportkilt several times already and are pleased with them.

I thought you were talking about the other website I mentioned until I clicked the website you provided me. I see it is clansman knitwear that is the rip off company. Tomorrow, I shall take action. You don't mess with a Maxwell, and get away with it, without a fight.

I got all bothered about this thread because my too swift reading of the first and second posts gave me the wrong idea about the opinion of sewfancy.com a former favourite sewing supply store of mine.

All's well though as I see it was some other business entirely. Anyway, Sew Fancy is a great place. I no longer shop there as the former owner separated the part of the business that I was interested in and created a new business (bramakerssupply.com). But, I still hear good things about Sew Fancy.

You should note though that the tartan fabric you were interested in is not for kilts. They are scaled minatures for doll-making. As quoted from the site:

In reality, I'm a laid back homebody type of guy who usually rolls with the waves, but after waiting now for 10 weeks and spending over $300.00 , this is one of the few times I'm not going to roll with the wave, I'm going into it head first.

And, I appreciate the heads up about the tartan fabric from sewfancy. I didn't see that bit of information.

Should be perfect for those who obsess about pleat count -- to the sett, 150 pleats with a 0.25-inch reveal!

Keep an eye on Frasier Kirkbright - They often have some good deals on remnants. Just watch the fabric weight and composition to be sure its kilt-worthy fabric.
