Any advice to finding current Irish clan chiefs. I did enough research to find out that Lord Lyon says there is an office that handles this but it seems dormant and under some contraversy right now.

The particular clan would be McKenney.

I would suggest contacting the Office of the Chief Herald:

According to a FAQ on their page, the recognition of Irish Chiefs of name has been discontinued, after a number of scandals involving falsefied pedigrees.

Finally, the book "Erin's Blood Royal" by Peter B. Ellis, does deal with the issue of Irish Chiefs, but some scholars question Mr. Ellis's accuracy and bias. (not a personal observation, btw)
