For those of you thinking about wearing your kilt in public for something other than a highland games...just back from a five day trip from Page to San Diego, California

Wore my UK Brown Leather on the first day over and last day back, for driving comfort. While there wore my hand sewn wook kilts, the Royal Air Force, Scott Red Modern, and Macdonald of Kingsburgh.

Most comments were from women, "I love your kilt" or some similar "Wow" type comment.

One lady did ask if my legs were cold (cold and windy out) just said, "Basic physics, heat rises."

Only negative comment was at the parking lot at the beach. Didn't see who it was, but some kid shouted out of his car, "You're wearing a dress, you must be gay." I ignored it. A sad commentary on the state of education these days when a teenager can't recognize a tartan kilt with sporran and flashes.

Well, like everyone says on here, you have to ignore the ignorant. You coulda yelled out "So's your Mother!", but why descend to their level.

For every derisive comment I get wearing my UKs I get probably half a dozen appreciative comments - mostly from the ladies. One of the funniest comments was a few weeks ago at the Jewel grocery store in Chicago on Roosevelt near Lake Shore Drive. I'm riding down the elevator from the upstairs liquor area with my cart of groceries when a guy (with is young daughter) says:

Guy: That's a kilt, right?

Me: Sure is.

Guy: Man, it takes a REAL MAN to wear a kilt, especially in this weather!

Me: Well, my ancestors were Highlanders so I guess it's in the blood.

Admitedly, it's hard not to get one's hackles up at some of the incredibly narrow-minded no-education comments and I've unfortunately been known to occasionally make the odd rude gesture in reply however, I usually can master the irrate Highlander-within and just remind myself that they're only poor Sassenachs anyway!

Well all I seem to be getting these days are polite questions, I was asked yesterday, things like

"Can I get your picture?"
"Arent you cold?"
"That pattern is for your family, right?"
"Whats in the purse, Sorry sporran?"

I even convinced someone else at work to wear their kilt. Heck, even the tow truck driver said nothing about it last night.
All in all it was a normal kilted day.

You got that right, I forgot about it already, but yesterday morning, one of my coworkers joking says
"So, why are you dressed like a girl?"
So I says to him
"Look around, are any of the women even in skirts" no they were all wearing pants.

Good morning, all.

I had a similar experience yesterday. Went hiking (down by Old Rag, for those in Virginia) with my trusty Golden, Murphy. Had never hiked in a kilt as I had worn it only on special occasions. Had nothing but appreciative looks and friendly hiker-to-hiker chat, except for a few local *boys* who yelled "Queer!" as I passed by their somewhat scary-looking shack on the way to the trailhead. Hmm. Interesting choice of words. Considered the source and walked on. When I didn't give them any reaction they yelled louder and more insistently, and temporarily suspended their game of horseshoes. Same word, over and over. I walked on without comment. When I came back that way they were nowhere to be seen.

On a more positive note, hiking up a mountain in a kilt on a spring-ish day - this is what they were made for! Will never again hike any other way.
