Jonesing young: a six year old asks for a kilt for his birthday

and his grandmother has agreed to make one.

Knowing that this kid will outgrow this kilt in something under twenty seconds, I'm looking for recommendations for fabric that will survive serious farm-kid wear. I doubt that a particular tartan is required, just a sturdy plaid fabric. Also, we have a sporran issue: I can't see a full adult-sized sporran working for a six year-old.

Any sources you care to suggest will be forwarded to this grandmother, who deserves plaudits for her willingness to make a kilt for her grandson.

A strange but workable idea for a child-size sporran:

Check the thrift stores or discount houses for a plain, small ladies shoulder bag which you can modify into a small sporran. I'll bet you can make something quite nice for under $10!

It's good to hear that one so young wants a kilt. Poly-viscose (PV) would be a good fabric to use. KiltStore is one source of boy's sporrans. http://kiltstore.net/browse/mens-wea...ml?id=79zTLa5E

I have seen poly-viscose in a few tartans for sale at "Walton Market". You might also decide to consider some blue denim as a rough and ready alternative.

There are small childrens sporrans available... but for a rough and tumble six year old, I'd be inclined to leave it at home except for church etc.

A sturdy belt is probably a good idea.

good luck

Kizmet,

Excellent! The X-Marks the Scot Junior Brigade keeps growing! I did the reverse, bought him a Sportkilt and made the sporran (the SportKilts for kid's are pretty inexpensive). My son Sinbad will be happy to see another kilted kid on the forum. Good Luck!

Cheers

Hit ebay for some deals on poly-rayon (rayon = viscose) tartan. it's out there, you just have to watch for it....and there are a few "regulars' who have some different tartans up all the time.

Note that on a 6 year old a smaller sett will look better than a big one. If grey is OK, then go to Fraser and Kirkbright and get the light gray tightan that I have. It's got a 4.75 inch sett...just right for a 6 year ol.

Celtic Croft (the link above right) has children's sporrans, and they are child sized!

I would suggest using Poly/viscose for a childs kilt, as it is machine washable. I have to replace my 5 year old's kilt, and am likely going to order it from MacHummel at http://www.canadiancasualkilts.com/

As for a kid's sporran, the ones at kiltstore at very nice, and I would easily order one of those if I wa sordering other stuff as well. However paying the duty on a kid's sporran alone (as little as it may be) seems a waste to me. I would look at Penny's of Thunderbay as they have cheaper kid's sporrans http://pennys.ca/purses.php ($25 cdn for a child's sporran works for me).

Well my son (age 7) bought a wool kilt. Now we live in the city and we're not allowing him to wear it every day. We also bought a kilt that was too big, by more than an inch long and fit him at the tightest setting. Hoping it will last a few months . Definitely going with Poly-Viscose next time. I like the teflon coating, and no dry cleaning.

I want to make him a sporran to finish the look, but being 7 he doesn't really need pockets for much. Less stones and frogs in the dirty laundry this way. Also I want to get him a Sgian Don't. But haven't found a good supplier.

I commend his grandmother! Well done on her part offering to properly attire the boy.
