Kilt in Argentina

Hi all,

I have the chance to have a brother and sister in law from Argentina and I plan to visit their family in their contry next X-mas. I plan to carry my kilt there and dress with it for the families reunions. That could be my third visit there.

My sister told me that I will sign my death arrest if I wear a kilt in Argentina because It's related with England culture and bad souvenirs from the Falkland war.

Has anybody went and visit Argentina kilted. What are my chances of "survival" ? :-)

I had a friend in Argentina (who has now moved to Quebec) who was of Scottish heritage, and wore his kilt frequently to various Scottish events, and never had any problems associated with the Falklands War -- I even asked him that very question, and he said that he had never even heard it mentioned.

I believe Argentina has their own tartan too. Would think historic hating of the English would be something they'd have in common with Scots - if that were still so....

And, I'd think the Argentines would identify with the juevos it would take to wear a kilt there. Give it an extra swish or two and stand tall.

As far as the common "hatred of the English" goes, remember that the Falklands/Malvinas dispute is not the "whole" story in terms of relations between the UK and Argentina. The British were very active in supporting the efforts of several South American countries in securing their independence from Spain, including Argentina, through the efforts of soldiers-of-fortune, one of the most famous being the Scot Thomas Cochrane, reportedly the basis for "Lucky Jack" Aubry in the "Master and Commander" novels of Patrick O'Brien. There's a bigger picture than just the "hatred of the English" that is waay too off-topic for here.
