Kilt Friendly places in Myrtle Beach?

The chaplain is having a couples weekend in Myrtle Beach this weekend. Can anyone point me toward some kilt friendly pubs? Preferably places that aren't too crowded.

This time of year I doubt you will find anywhere in the MB area that is not too busy

. I was kilted there this past March and got no comments good or bad. Just a whole lot of people trying to sneak pictures on their cell phones. I didn't find anywhere that was particularly kilt friendly but keep in mind their whole economy is geared to tourism so they have to be somewhat friendly to everyone. I'm sure they get ALL types during the summer months.

While there, I did check about for an Irish pub and only found 3 or 4. The only one we managed to visit was Blarney Stone's in the Broadway at the Beach complex. I don't think they ever saw a kilt before but it was fairly quiet and they had decent food.

If you are staying on the north end (the Strand area is at least 30 mi. N to S), I will recommend House of Blues. The food has been excellent every time I have visited, and the atmosphere is incredible (although they don't really play Blues music while you eat any more

.) To the south, I would say to check out the Murrell's Inlet area. There are multiple excellent restaurants with bay views all connected by a small waterside boardwalk. Also to the south, at Surfside Beach pier, there is a small restaurant called Nibbles that has incredible breakfasts. They have a nice ocean view. It is run by a family of Irish descent and definitely has that feel to it.

If you what any more info, feel free to PM me. My mom has been spending a month in MB every year for the last decade+ and she is very good at finding restaurants so I have eaten all over the area. That's the problem with MB, you gain too much weight to fit into your kilts.

Myrtle beach itself in the off season is pretty mellow have family right down from there in Murrells Inlet visit a few times a year.At this time of the year its crazy busy been trying to think of any pubs in the area.Ill talk to family see if I can find anything out and post what I find.

There's a place on Main St. in North Myrtle. It's an Irish pub/tavern/restaurant type thing, My wife and I ate there last year and enjoyed it. One side is a restaurant which had some traditional food like fish & chips plus other stuff and then there was a bar on the other side. Can't remember the name but seems like it was an Irish surname like Kelly's or Murphy's or something like that. If you turn off the main drag on Hwy 17 it's on the right down near the beach. The funny thing was I'm sitting here eating fish & chips in a really Irish looking place and in the bar some guy is singing Italian songs. Mama Mia thatsa spicy fish anna cheep!

BonnieT100, do you know where you'll be staying? As noted, it's a long strip of sand, and at times can take a while to traverse. It shames me to say (as a former resident of the Independent Republic of Horry) that I'm out of touch. Some of my favorite restaurants --- well, most of them --- have closed.

Good thought! that suggests something not quite intuitive.

Horst Gasthaus, in the Windy Hill section of North Myrtle Beach, is a really fun place. I've never been there kilted, but there's usually at least one guy in lederhosen

Horst himself is Bavarian, IIRC, and very hospitable. Music borders on cheesy but fun. Food is good value, not cheap but not too dear.

Collector's Cafe, north end of MB proper on King's Hwy/Business 17; 7726 N. King's Highway, reservations preferred, open evenings Monday through Saturday, phone (843) 449-9370. Walter recommends the grilled filet of beef while Jena suggests the scallop or crab cakes. Bonus: dessert is served all afternoon, no reservations required!

Chuck's steak house a bit farther north, between Myrtle/North Myrtle.

If you're south, Murrell's Inlet was mentioned. Brookgreen Gardens, if you have a day/half-day free, is magical http://www.brookgreen.org/

My folks retired to the north strand and I've been kilted there on a semi-regular basis and never experienced any problems whatsoever, at any time of year. You'll get a lot of looks, a few questions and a giggle or two, but I've never experienced any worse that that (and I visit my parents as often as possible, taking full advantage of the available golf.

If you play golf, THE place to play is Pine Lakes Country Club. It's a great old course, nicknamed "The Grandaddy", where the course rangers and staff wear either trews or kilts and a piper has been known to play on the course. There's a great little pub there as well.

To add a favorite restaurant to Fluter's list, and they are "kilt indifferent" (I've been in kilted and bifurcated) is The Sea Captain's House. Great food, nice ambiance and a spectacular view!

really when you look at where you are in a big tourist area and people of walks of life dont worry about it get dressed and go. you will be the best dressed around and in style. I have really alot latley about my kirt wearing
here at home and thinking who cares who see;s me I really dont care to have to explain it I like my kilts and I'm going to wear them

Thank you, Brandy! that one was teasing my memory. We had lunch there a while back. It's a very nice, medium-sized place on Lake Arrowhead road near Arcadian Shores/Hilton. You can turn off Hwy 17 across from Chuck's Steak House, hang a left at Lake Arrowhead RD. My wife gave the beer her stamp of approval, I don't recall what she had. Food was very good.
