Thanks for the support and the emails guys. In truth it didn't upset me much to not get into a bar I didn't want to go to in the first place. The flimsy reasoning bothered me more. I would have rather he said that he didn't want a guy in a kilt in his bar. At least it would have been honest.

As more drinks were had, numerous questions about the kilt came up. I answered all of them, and the St. Louis crowd got more comfortable with the kilt. One of them admitted to thinking, "Who's the weirdo in a dress?" when she first saw me.
| There's actually a fairly large Scottish community in StL...the St. Andrew's Society of St. Louis holds a number of events a year, the MO Tartan Day Festival in over in St. Charles...pity that the StL games were cancelled this year. 
StL even bosts two pipe bands; the John Ford Pipe Band and St. Louis Caledonian (nee Inveraan) Pipe Band.

I am a bit disturbed that any business would want to turn away customers by the dozen ( wellll by the elevens anyway). Mind started into "bouncer mode". The door attendant felt he was only keeping the kilted one out, and felt the others would enter without the kilted one. Poor logic, the eleven left together equally upset with his/her actions.
Thank you Todd for another brain burst. Many people see kilts only in a parade attached to bagpipes, or at a funeral attached to bagpipes. Some of these kilted pipe bands are from police departments or fire brigades. One thing "bouncers" like less than lawyers are off duty police officers of the local jurisdiction. Although I doubt the door attendant knew Brewboy is a lawyer, he/she sure doesn't want to have a police officer see the bouncer assaulting or battering an unruly patron in the process of "escorting" said patron from the premise. Also Cook County is world famous for some of its police officer's off duty hi jinks. I do not wish to insult anyone on this board, but my experiences with door attendants (as they are called here) has generally been positive. I have gone to establishments to meet people, where the door attendant seeing me as someone ( real old F**t) visiting the establishment and possibly not aware of its theme, such as gangsta rap, punk, heavy metal, or other environs perceived as belonging to other outward appearances. The door attendant has usually said to me "you are aware that we cater to the _________. " A polite response that I was there to meet with a regular of the establishment, and that I respected the culture within, usually satisfied the door attendants desire to keep peace inside.
The only time a door attendant wouldn't let me in was when I was the scheduled entertainer for the evening. I asked the door attendant to take my name to ___ (the manager on duty) and I would be patient outside. He refused, I went to the nearest working coin phone and called the bar asked to speak with the manager, and informed him of the action. By the time I had walked back, the door attendant couldn't assist me in fast enough.

I find myself biased when talking about the closed mindedness of most Missourians. Probably because I'm a Missourian myself.

I have no quipps to offer, other than I am sorry that this happened to you. In conservative Colorado Springs, I can't imagine somthing like this happening. Of course, we have a rather large number of Scots-Irish! But you never know, might happen to me next week. If it does, I hope I address it as tastefully as you did...sometimes my Irish blood can get me in a wee bit o' trouble...
