Kilt pins and airport security . . .

We flew to Durham to celebrate our sons graduation at Duke (pics in show us your pics). At Ithaca Airport, they pulled my bag after passing it through the x-ray machine three times. My kilt pin was causing the bother. I explained, but they unpacked the bag, took out the kilt and had a good look. We had a nice chat and I said, "good job I did not have a sgian dubh with me." The airport official said it would have been OK as checked luggage but not as hand luggage. The kilt pin (lethal 3 inch pin) was OK.

Don't get me started.
I understand checking for security but I get more than a little disappointed in many of the proceedures and the people running it when I see little old ladies and gentlemen (over 80 - a definite threat) being searched. Besides it is not difficult for anyone to get on the internet and buy various non metalic weapons that can get through security hidden on the person, in carryons, within baby strollers etc. Like locks on doors - They are only effective in keeping the average person honest.

Glad you weren't inconvenienced too much.

The problem is that when you start excluding certain groups of people, no matter how sensible, somebody starts screaming about profiling. It's just the way it is.

Plus, the people who want to do harm get wise: "Hey, they don't check (certain group) for security reasons! Let's get a member of (certain group) to blow up an airplane! They won't check the guy! Perfect!"

Personally, I consider profiling a legitimate tool for law enforcement. I know lots of folks disagree with me but, for example, young middleeastern males are the vast majority of bombers why search Swedish grandmothers and pass those young middleeastern males? Profiling simply indicates who to focus on the most. Others can be checked whenever something out of the ordinary shows up.
