Kilt Wearing Opportunities

So now that the Burns Suppers season is more or less finished, what now for frequent but not everyday kiltwearer?
Coming up next month is St. Patrick's Day, but although celebrated to a certain extent in Scotland, it never has been a day for Scots to wear the kilt.

The 6 Nations Rugby Tournament is currently taking place between February and mid-March and that throws ups opportunities to be kilted, especially England v Scotland on 19th March.

At times on the ocassional weekend at the pub, I have just decided to be kilted, amazingly, you always are asked why the kilt tonight? You get this from the barstaff and total strangers, people it seems always want to talk to a kiltie. Perhaps this weekend if the feeling takes me I might wear the kilt, just now I don't fancy the idea, weather is too miserable.

So despite the fact I enjoy kilt wearing, I don't want to be kilted all the time, perhaps in an ideal world with ideal situations it would be good to be kilted all the time. Perhaps the feeling that we all get when kilted may be reduced by constant wear, I would'nt like that, the high I get when kilted is always brilliant.

I could never wear the kilt at work, it would be too inappropriate with the people I work with and my clientele, probably don't want to wear it at work anyway, could'nt be bothered with all the fuss and comments I would get, although none of the comments would be derogatory.

Anyway roll on the next few months where there will be loads of opportunities to be kilted and make me happy

Sunday Church
Monday Funeral
Tuesday Scottish Country Dance class
Wednesday Lunch date
That's four opportunities to be kilted this week for starters.

If, as we are told, showing up kilted in Scotland is considered showing up in your "Sunday best", then you might get the odd person asking, "what are you all dressed up for?"

Shouldn't deter you, though...just remember how out of context showing up kilted looks over here and some of the "constructive criticism" that we get.

In Scotland people just think that you're overdressed...hereabouts they think that you're wearing some kind of costume.

In the last couple of weeks I have worn my kilt maybe six or eight times. The biggest surprise was the night I stopped by Lowes (a big box building materials firm) and had an employee say, oh, MacGregor tartan? She was right and I was surprised anybody in Des Moines would recoggnize it. I wore it to the Home Show at the Auditorium and to church and out to eat. Most people say nothing and some ask questions.

Doesn't need to be a really big "occasion", though Saturday night I took my girlfriend out for a great dinner at a Brazilian churrascaria. I did make a point of not "outshining" her and wore fairly quiet colors in a "smart casual" ensemble:

Kilt in Douglas Modern -- no dirk belt

Black lambskin kilt jacket from Stillwater Kilts

Tattersall-type white-based shirt from Orvis, bottom swatch here (no tie or waistcoat)

Black Ferguson Britt Duin Uasal sporran

Dark-green hose, burgundy garter ties, sgian dubh, "non-dressy" black wingtips (they're actually steel-toed work shoes in a wingtip design, good "day wear" shoes).

All went very well, no negative comments, girlfriend was happy, and I enjoyed the subsequent meat coma.

Last time I kilted up was Sunday for a wedding. Granted that's a pretty "traditional" setting for the kilt, but I was certainly the only man there who wasn't wearing p@nts.

Folks loved it, as they tend to do, but for the most part, people were focused enough on the folks getting married that they didn't pay me much mind.

I wore mine to class this morning. Now that the weather is turning nicer, I'll be doing that a lot more.

Blast! I am not allowed to wear it to Chemistry lab.

I am sure I can think of a lot or reasons to wear my kilt, but I just can NOT imagine wearing on in my Chemistry Labs...I'm not sure how many pieces of clothing I destroyed not to mention (and I suspect this is the real reason) the safety concern.

But, fortunately my Chemistry labs are LONG since over...so I haven't that concern any more

If one is breathing, It's a good opportunity to wear the kilt. Sadly, though, I neglected to wear mine to dinner the other day. We met some friends for an early dinner to celebrate his birthday. I was standing at the door when in walks a guy in shorts. It was about 28 degrees outside at the time. I started talking to him saying I almost wore my kilt. He was surprised that I wasn't wearing it. I told him these old knees need some warmth and the kilt stayed home today. But any other time, (Other than work) I ttry to wear the kilt. It has started many a conversation. All Hail the Power of The Kilt.
