Kilted Canoers?

Any out there?

Got an Old Town Pack canoe and found it quite enjoyable. No fishing or kids or epic journeys just a paddle and water.

Been kayaking (not kilted) for several years now. Rented a canoe to paddle with the kids, man that was so much harder work. Oh well as long as i'm on a river surrounded by my Canadian wilderness I'm in my own zone, no doubt as you are.

We have a 16' Peterborough canvas over cedar strip. We paddle around the local lake, and that's about it.

17 foot We-no-nah here that I have not used in a while. I guess if you are extremely careful about not geting any water in the canoe getting in and around in the canoe (I.e. launch from a dock or a rock), and don't drip any in the canoe with the paddle, canoeing kilted would probably be fun. Since I am a classic kneeler when I canoe and am alwys the heaviest person on board I could otherwise see myself dipping my lovely tartan pleats into the bilgewater as I cruised around the stream or lake. Would not personally try it in one of my nice wool kilts but might in my PV Douglas Modern sometime, since that is washable anyway.

I have been wanting to get a fishing kayak or a smaller canoe for fishing and pleasure cruising. I could see the possibilities doing it kilted, especially after I get my freedom cargo.

Problem is, in a kayak at least, your bum is only 3" off of the bottom and the pleat hem will be sittin g on the bottom. Water will inevitably get in unless you're wearing a skirt and if that's the case you'll have flatwaters like me mocking you in your "skirt". Sit-on-tops are worse because you're always sitting in a puddle!

Well you can't wear your Sunday kilt in the canoe but in your knockin' around kilt it's a ball.

True but it does come back to what Alan H asked regarding where not to wear a kilt. This is especially true in a kayak. In a canoe I've only ever done it seated and never kneeling and see no problems being kilted when seated. That being said I'm planing a 5 day kayak trip down our Grand River that cuts through southern Ontario to Lake Erie and I plan to do it kilted just so I can say I've done it. It sould be a good trip, I've already found a beer store the river bank half way through the trip. Should lighten the load a bit and get lighter as I paddle down river.
