Kilted at Dog Shows?

Madadh posted a pic of him walking his wolfhounds in some sort of a parade while he's kilted. I don't know much about dog shows but seem to remember that theres a time when the dog owners parade their dog for the judges.

Got to wondering if many dog owners kilt up to parade their dogs at such dog shows? Or, is it like a wedding where you don't wanna distract from the main feature?

Perhaps someone more knowledgeable than me has the answer.

I always watch for that, too, thinking it would be such an approrpiate thing especcially for those dogs of Scottish heritage. But I wonder if it may be too distracting to the judges. Most of the handlers seem to dress in non-descript clothing.

Having attended my share of dog shows (I raised a couple of litters of Welsh Terriers and showed a couple to champion with my ex), I have only seen a kilt on a well turned-out, pipe-smoking gent once at a specialty show somewhere in the vicinity of Doylestown or Newtown, Pennsylvania. He was never in the ring, so he was probably an owner, not a handler.

IMHO a kilt would distract too much. You don't want the handler looking better than the dog, and wearing a kilt would do that.

Well, a lesser dog might benefit from a kilted handler, depending on the judge.

I've seen a kilted handler in a show I saw on TV, so it must have been a major show, though I can't remember which. Westminster, maybe?

I've seen a few kilted gentlemen during a West Highland dog show... speaking of which my Mom's Westie is about to have a litter of pups.

I think you could easily get away with being kilted. Dog shows I've been at, the handlers have "show" outfits to parade in that are -- theoretically! -- better than jeans and skivvies, but in practice need some decent, modern fashion sense. So a kilted outfit would probably show much of them up! :-)

And you'd probably want a "highland" dog of some sort it to make sense. A Cavalier King Charles Spaniel might work, but probably wouldn't...

Good question Ron. To take a slight tangent off your question I wonder if anyone does dog agility shows or sheep trials in a kilt [goes off dreaming of a wool crusted highlander whistling his dog around some "kilts on the hoof."
