Kilted at the pizza shop

Well, first, I have to bow my head in shame, and let you all know, that when I went to NY for my grandfathers funeral (he was 99) I did not wear my kilt. It was the Italian in-laws. They dont like me, and the kilt would have been take as disrespectful, so I opted not to cause trouble. I know, I know, nothing you could say would make me feel any less cheap, but I caved.

Anyway, on a good note, I wore my olive UK all day today, EBgames, Home Depot, shoping at Walmat, a thrift store, where I found a great jacket to turn into a kilt jacket, and at an Italian restaurant named Vinnies. Good nods and appreciative comments everwhere I went. Even at Vinnies one of the ladies came to our table and told me "I just had to tell you, I love your kilt" It was a great day. And I will be wearing my tartan to Church tomorrow.

No need to be shamed. No need to fuel the fire by wearing it to a place where it could be seen as disrespectful. Bottom line... it's a piece of clothing. No need to get people ticked at you b/c of some perceived insult.

They'll actually like you more and appreciate it more when they find out that you NORMALLY wear it to things like that, but DIDN'T on THIS instance out of respect for them. Make sure your wife points that out to them at a more appropriate time.

I dont think you should bow your head at all, there are occassions where a kilt is just not welcome, if your grandfather, or his family would not want you in a kilt then you did the right thing. One thing you dont need is for someone in your family to think you are being disrespectful at a funeral.

Right thing to do. There will be plenty of other days like today to wear the kilt, and foregoing the comfort of the kilt for this funeral was the right thing to do.

Sorry to hear about your grandfather. I too believe that you made the right call on not wearing it to that particular occasion.

Please accept me condulences(sp?). I agree with everyone who has chimed in so far. It is better to "fly" under everyones radar than to cause problems.

Choosing not to offend someone is rarely the wrong course of action. You showed love and respect to family. That's an honorable thing to do, even in trousers.
