Kilted to school?

Hi gang!
I was wondering...I'm getting my first kilt soon next week (will post pics, of course!

) and I was wondering if I should wear it to school? On wednesday is Öskudagur(Ash Wednesday) which is celebrated here in Iceland kinda like Halloween, kids wear costumes and get candy and people are encouraged to wear costumes in my school. I know that the kilt is not a ''costume'' and I would never wear it as such, but...I think it would be a great excuse to wear my kilt to school

. What do you think?

I'm in the 10th. grade (will be 16 years old in april), BTW.

While you are correct in saying the kilt is not a costume, if you want to wear it, I say go ahead. I'm sure there are many who have started the same way.

Hi Gunnar,

I agree with McMurdo, it is a perfect time to wear your kilt for the first time. Others will be dressed 'differently' so you won't feel or look strange. Then when you wear it again to school, everyone will have seen it already and it won't be such a big deal.

I agree with the previous posts. ANY excuse to wear a kilt is a good excuse in my book! Let us know how it went, and of course, pictures, too.

My nephew Seamus used to wear his to a public high school here in the US. If you look up his username, you will find threads describing some of his kilted adventures at school.

Go for it! Careful wearing the sgian dbuh however; it is probably not allowed.

I second the "Go for it!" sentiment. I started wearing my kilt at various work environments via Halloween (at a BestBuy no less), then moved on to "Casual Kilt Fridays" at the State of Delaware.

Also, depending on the type of Kilt Pin, you might want to leave it behind too (I have one that is sword like, the other is the Xmarks 2005 model. When I go to the Airport/government building, I always use the Xmarks, because even though the sword shape one is as sharp as my boot heel, it is still weapon-like enough that I've gotten harassed for it.

It's aa good of time as any to start wearing the kilt. Just remember, don't get sucked into a rut thinking of the kilt as a costume. It is by-no-uncertain-terms not a costume.
