Kilted Young'uns

My wife informed me, at our last highland games, that if we had sons I would not be allowed to buy them kilts until they are old enough to tell me that they want one. I understand her not wanting me to force it on them but still kids in kilts are so cute. What a quandry......

My five year old daughter loves me in my kilt but surprisingly hasn't asked for one of her own. She has skirts that are plaid...not tartan so don't send me death threats for using the p word. maybe that is why...I don't know.

Anyway to keep a happy wife I won't argue to much, though I do remind her of it on a regular basis. Always remember happy wife...happy life.

I bought a Scottish vintage (1968) wool tartan (Morrison Green Modern) girls "kilt" for one of my daughters. When I gave it to her the first thing she said was "Dad, I can't wear that! Kilts are for boys!" A year earlier, we had the "girls wear skirts, and boys wear kilts" conversation. After I explained that a girls kilted skirt opens on the left, and a boys kilt opens on the right, she understood, and she loved it. Now her little sister can't wait for big sister to out-grow it and hand it down to her. Now the only problem is that I may be commisioning a couple wool tartan girls kilts every year or two as they continue to grow. And I thought college was going to be expensive.

My son is 5. He likes me in my kilt. And, as boys want to be like their dads, he has asked for his own kilt. If having more children is in your future, I wish you nothing but happy and healthy. If you get a son...don't worry, he'll want one.

Should you be blessed with a son, and you want him kilted, then let his hero be kilted. Then Dad, you become and remain that hero. Two things will happen. He will choose kilts as sure as the sunrise, and you will have well begun the work of a lifetime. There are no words to say how much I envy you those possibilities.

I wish people wouldn't do this. This is just so wrong. Girls wear kilts. Real kilts too. To me this is just plain discrimination.

My youngest was in his infant kilt within 2 weeks of being born, same day I first wore my first kilt at just shy of age 49. His was still a bit big, and he obviously did not go regimental, but then enither did I that first time. He out grew that kilt by about 18 months, had a poor quality PV Black Watch that he hardly wore after that, but now has an Altkilt and most recently his new DFT kilt to wear. He has been speaking clearly for nearly two years now and has been excited every time I wear my kilt, asking to wear his too. So don't fear, unless prohibited somehow they will want to follow their father's footsteps especially when they are young, it is only natural to want to do what the grown ups do. After that they develop their own personalities and that is when it really becomes their "choice". Hopefully by then you will have them, and your wife, converted. Good luck and happy kilting.

We were at a games with my 6-year-old and I asked him "do you want a kilt?" and he practically yelled "YES!"

We were at Epcot in our kilts on Saturday, we are still at Disney now and will be going to dinner tonight in our kilts... as well (weather permitting) another day at Epcot kilted.

My wife didn't get any pics of me where I wasn't seated and filling my mouth with Scotch or beer at the Rose and Crown... but I did get a picture of my son in his kilt with Mickey stickers all over the sporran...
