Kinloch Anderson Breacan

I am thinking about my second kilt. I am thinking of going with the Kinloch Anderson Breacan. Has anyone here had any experience with this type of kilt? I am going to be in Scotland in three weeks and was thinking that since it is "off that rack" that I would check the Breacan at the store in Leith and possibly pick one up. I am looking to get a second (I know that means a third, then fourth...) for hiking, pub nights to reduce wear and tear on my "good" kilt (Wilson Tartan). I like the Edinburgh Tartan for this one. I am also starting to think that a 4 or 5 yard lighter weight custom kilt in Barclay Tartan will be a year or so down the road.

I am wearing the Kinloch Anderson Breacan right now. It is one of 6 kilts I own (7 if you count the one being made.) I have owned this kilt for several months and am quite please with it. It s very well made and it is comfortable to wear. The pleats hold up very well to sitting and it rarely needs to be ironed. It has received numerous complements. It is worn lower than a traditional kilt, i.e., at the pant belt line.

That's interesting Rick, but personally, I don't like kilts worn low, I feel more comfortable with the kilt up to the navel, or at least, above the hips.

Given that, I'm glad I didn't buy one, happy that you like yours though.

I guess it all depends one where one wears one's pants. I wear the Breacan lower than the traditional kilts I own, however, that does not mean below the hips. I wear it basically at the navel as opposed to a couple of inches above the navel as with the traditional kilts. It is designed/cut such that it does not feel strange, nor does it look bad when worn lower than the traditional kilt. The inner-apron is held in place with Velcro on the left, and there is a vestigial buckle on the outside left for appearance sake. There are 2 straps on the right. One to adjust the fit at the waist line and the other to adjust the fit at the hips.

I also called at K-A in the hope of buying a Breacon off-the rack and came away empty-handed. The tartan/size availability was very limited and I found the assistant to be very unhelpful. Being a 36" waist, I do not consider this to be unusual and would have expected this to be available in more than one or two tartans. Doubt I'll visit them again.

If I remember correctly, Hamish has one in their corporate tartan. It's a sharp looking tartan and kilt. On page two of Hamish's gallery, he has a BReacon in the Edignburgh tartan and one in the corporate tartan. Check them out.
