Lookie What I found!

Found this a few years ago at a yard sale and picked it up for 50 cents. I am thinning out my possessions as I have downsized the house and all the stuff accumulated over the years. Pulled this out of a box and was kinda thrilled by the great condition of the thing.

Thought I would share pics with you all here and get some feed back as to the value of what I have. Has anyone heard of it? Is it factual or still part of the "myth" of "Ol' Scotland"?

Will answer any questions and take extra pics if anyone wants.

Here in the UK it is classed not as 'rare', but 'hard to find'. I have seen copies on sale for £50, without a dust jacket. It is now out of copyright and is available as digital download. I have a digital copy myself.

All that having been said, it is a wonderful book. It is accurate (for the time) and a reasonably good reference material. Not so hot for threadcount, but just what you need for a quick check to see the differences between, say, MacKenzie and MacLeod.

A great book and I am jealous.

We have a copy of that book in our museum's reference library. I'd agree with what Chas says. It's not especially rare and valuable, but it is rather hard to come across. Thomas Innes of Learney would later go on to become Lord Lyon. He was a Lord Lyon who had a special interest in tartan (and some would say even went beyond the Lyon Court's actual jurisdiction in some of his proclamations regarding tartan -- I trace the "rule" that women must wear sashes on their right shoulder back to him).

He also edited Frank Adam's benchmark work, Clans, Septs & Regiments of the Scottish Highlands, so much so that in later editions Innes of Learney is given credit as a co-author!

I own the same exact book with dust jacket and all. I purchased it whilst in Edinburgh in 2007. Another edition to my seemingly endless library of everything tartan, Scottish Highland, heraldric, etc! Excellent book.

Sorry, Sorry, Sorry. I was having a senior moment. The on-line book is a different one. The book I down loaded was "What is my tartan?" I have already emailed Todd a copy.

In my defence, all my other comments are accurate.

Not a first edition, but there are a few on eBay.

Here is one
