MacGregor Tartan swatches

Here are the two swatches I just got from STM, thanks Matt.

Top is the Ancient
Bottom is the weathered

I like the weathered better, the ancient is just a bit bright for me.

This is due to the vegetable dyes they used at the time had faded. Or so I have been told.

With it being said that each computer monitor shows different hues from what I see, I'd go with the weathered. I agree with the above posters comments. However I wouldn't be wearing it you will so in the end it's you who'll finally decide and we all will celebrate the addition of another new kilt in our ranks.

Call me a cwazy wabbit I LOVE ancient tartan colors. That red is out of this world so that would be my pick. That is until someone comes up with a line of "ancient weathered" tartans. Personally, I would go for a range of ancient "peat bog" tartans - simulating colors of kilts buried in peat bogs for about a hunderd years - now that would be cool.

That's actually what the "weathered" colors are supposed to represent.

In theory, the "ancient" colors are selected to look like an old, faded piece of cloth.

The "weathered" colors are meant to emulate what a tartan would look like buried in the peat for a couple of centuries, with the colors washed out.

Now, whether or not either of the above accurately depicts what it claims to is another matter, but such is the intent.

The "modern" colors are just the standard colors of new cloth.

Oh, and my vote would be for the weathered.

With the STARKNESS of the contrast, I keep wondering why you can't decide, David. I think it gets down to whether YOU like the BRIGHT orange-y and MINT green (STILL reminds me of the Miami Dolphins or the University of Miami Hurricanes) OR the more muted brown-y/red and olive.

Between the 2, I would go with the weathered, as I prefer the more subtle tones to BRIGHT orange and BRIGHT green. Of course, I would probably just be getting the "modern" colors, myself. However, I might need to re-access my feelings on that weathered one (I usually don't like weathered much, as most are just WAY to brown for me).

So, I vote weathered.

The ancient is my favorite of the two, the orange color (as shown in the photograph) is actually more of a rust color. I saw a sash made of this tartan last weekend, it is a beautiful tartan and would look great with either black or brown leathers.
