Making a New Dress Sporran

Hello again. I'm starting on making a Full Dress Sporran, and I would like some advice. I am using a black rabbit fur front, and I am casting a cantle out of aluminum, (lets hope that works out). But I am wondering what weights of leather you all would suggest I use for the backing and inside. And if I am completely off on my approach then please tell me. ANY information you could give me is welcome, as I am blindly patching my design together from what little I can find on the internet. Please help a newbie.

I would use something heavy and what's appropriate to the weight of the Cantle. Depending on how you make the Cantle, it could be quite heavy. The heavier leather would withstand use better...

I would go with at least 12-14oz leather [cow/steer] for front and back and perhaps goat for the gusset as well as to line it. You can also use pigskin for lining as it is very, very supple. Many garments are made from pigskin as it is thin, sueded and soft to the touch. I get all my leather from Tandy Leather and have been extremely happy with what they have:
