Making a personal sporran

Hey all,

I was wondering if anyone has pictures of the personal sporrans they had made? I am planning on getting a sporran made with a bear hide I got last year and need some ideas.

Just enjoy. I am making a modern sporran with a sort of traditional flair right now. It is very different from what I have done in the past and I am enjoying the challenge.

DWFII, I have responded to a couple of your posts on cantles.

Since the cantle and fur are two of the factors which make sporrans costly in my experience, a cantle is not a cheap item. They run around £48 (approximately US$ 100) and are hard to find on their own. Try Elegant Scotland or McKenzie-Frain. These aren't cheap, but they can jazz up an inexpensive sporran, or change the look of an existing sporran. You could indeed by an inexpensive sporran on eBay for the cantle, but the cantles on those aren't as nice in terms of material compared to a quality cantle.

Most stores will offer choice of cantles in custom sporrans (e.g., L & M Highland), but won't sell the cantle without a sporran since you could buy an eBay cheapo and jazz it up. You've seen the variety of hardware at Lamont Sporrans and clanart. Clanart sells all the bosses, bells, and other things which jazz up the cantle, but only wholesale (so it seems).

Given I can create a sporran at L & M which will cost me several thousand dollars, I am getting a feel for the what accounts for the difference in cost.

I know you have...as have others...and I appreciate it. I have looked at those cantles. All very nice, and very tempting for when I get a pattern and some basic techniques worked out. I have not seen a matte black one like Joe is using, however.

My guess would be that he took a cheapo sporran and painted the cantle matte black.

IM me and I will send you a cantle I removed from a sporran. You can at least use it for a template.
