Stewart/Stuart. The spelling was changed while she was growing up in France, as the French alphabet did not have the letter "w" at the time.

If by "clan" you mean "Highland," the royal Stewarts/Stuarts weren't a part of a Highland clan. The main Stewarts of the Highlands were the Stewarts of Appin.

    Pettycoat tails

This is a bit OT, but did you know that when Marie Stuart went back to Scotland, she brought along her French baker ?
This man baked short breads he called "Petites gautelles", which were pronounced and later to be known as... Pettycoat tails.

...sorry, but everytime I hear a reference to Mary Queen of Scots, I think of this.

I'm totally showing my ignorance here - but Pettycoat tails is a type of bread?

Never heard of them..... at least not by that name.

The story goes that when Mary was sick, her French chef created something for her which he called Marie est malade (Mary is sick). Today we call it Marmalade.
