Medical Occupational Tartan?

Is there any occupational tartans for people in medical or health care field?

Maybe the Utilikilts White Workman's...? Color is right. "white on white" tartan...

Probably a great garment for chiropractors who have to assume difficult positions to adjust their patients...or ER docs and nurses who need to have a lot of gear handy...or dentists who spend a lot of time sitting while working..

Nope. Unless you count corporate tartans that were designed for an individual company, or military tartans, or perhaps royal tartans, the only 'occupational' tartan is for the clergy.

The answer is DINERO!!!

IIRC, it costs around $2,000.00 to design, register, and have woven a new tartan.

Your absolutely right, Alan H. Iam in the process of designing (not me personally !) a tartan for the Caig family. I have found a small weaver who will weave a sample of 2 metres for about £60.00. Registration with the Scottish Tartan Authority costs £50.00 or £25.00 for members.

Thankfully, this is not $2,000.00.

In Iain Zacek's and Charles Phillip's "The Complete Book of Tartans", there is a brief reference to a "MacMedic" tartan, a simple red and white check, under the heading "Novelty Tartans" -- supposedly this tartan was worn at the first aid post at the Stone Mountain Games. (p.113)

However, one possibility I would suggest to a person in the medicial field might be the Livingstone tartan, in honour of Dr. David Livingstone, the missionary-doctor who explored Africa in the 19th century.

I obtained permission from the Clan Muir Society to wear the Muir Tartan as an "unofficial" tartan for park rangers in honour of Scottish enviromentalist John Muir, so why not? Pipe Bands wear tartans in honour of former members, patrons, clans, etc.

In that case, I must be undercharging! No wonder I feel I'm making too little money on my commissions!

May I ask, who is the weaver? I need more resources of capable weavers who will do a small sample. Do you know if s/he will use Pantones for colour specification? Is that for worsted wool twill? Is it £60.00 per metre or for the whole 2 metres? Single width or double width? Do they have a minimum or maximum? (If you don't know all this, that's OK -- but if you have an email address for the weaver, I'd like to get it.)

The STA have raised the price of registration of a Clan/Family or Personal tartan to £75.00 (£50.00 for members), or for a Corporate, District, Commemorative, or Fashion tartan, £100.00 (£75.00 for members), so it's a bit more now.

To further Todd's post on the MacMedic tartan -- this was indeed born out of the creative genuis of the good medical volunteers at teh First Aid tent at the Stone Mountain (GA) Highland Games.

They wanted to make their tent fit in more by setting it up as a "clan tent" as you will, so they had a "Clan MacMedic" sign made to hang out front. The "chief" of the "clan" even carried a marvelous staff carved by Jim Anderson, who also carved the staves carried by several actual clan cheifs.

To complete it all, they wanted a tartan. Some took to wearing a simple red and white check (just like Rob Roy, only in red and white instead of red and black -- think Pizza Hut table cloth). This was chosen because the design makes little red crosses. The late Dr. Gordon Teall, at the time Priesident of the Scottish Tartans Society, saw this being worn at the Stone Mountain Games and offered to have it actually recorded under the name "MacMedic" as a novely tartan. And so it exists. :-)

You'll see it prominantly at the Stone Mountain Games each year, and many other games in the area where members of the MacMedic clan may be volunteerings.
