Military Insigna

Being retired military, I will hold my NCO rank at discharge permanently. Has anyone used a small, metal, military rank insignia as part of a kilt pin? Is there rule or regulation that would prohibit it's use? I was thinking of the insignia attached to a polished disc (for added weight) or some other backing to increase the size and visibility of the rank insignia.

In my mind, there are no real rules regarding kilt pins. You earned the rank, wear it proudly.

All I remember is that I could not wear any of my uniform items with an insignia while in civilian attire.

However, I don't think it applied to the actual insignia when removed from uniform.

I have seen several members of the submarine veterans organization I belong to wear their rank insignia pins on the front of their ballcaps.

Sort of depends on whose military. I spent four years active duty in the USMC, and I have been told (since my discharge is Honorable) I may wear my stripes, the EGA or my ribbons/medals/devices as long as there is no attempt to appear as if I am in current uniform. I wear an EGA as a both a kilt pin and a cap badge depending on the outfit. I also sometimes wear my Combat Aircrew Wings as a beret flash. We earned them, we can wear them! Since you are retired, certainly your rank still applies. Why not?

When I was looking for a larger USMC Staff Sgt stripes to honor my late little brother I found a company selling USMC insignia in the San Diego area that was willing to cast them larger than the normal collar insignia. Never had it done. Sorry, don't recall which company so point is just that you may be able to have them made.

I believe most services allow you to wear any insignia you earned (rank, qualification badges, unit patches, etc) in such a manner that does not bring discredit upon the military.

I've seen plenty of USMC Eagle, Globe and Anchor insignia worn as a kilt pin, bonnet badge (have two myself), on a belt buckle, or on a sporran.

Personally, I think wearing your rank as part of a kilt pin would be entirely appropriate.

Contact Carl Lemke about making you a custom kilt pin. You won't be disappointed. As far as design goes, might I suggest placing your chevrons over an NCOs sword? Just a suggestion.

I used my Special Forces unit crest and patch for my balmoral. I just may have to make a new kilt pin with my rank on it- good idea!

I got out a CTR1, U.S. Navy. I wear my "crow" as a kilt pin from time to time. I sometimes also wear my unit patches on my sporting kilts (Edzell Tartan) I wear for highland games.
