Moment of silence to honor the dead

A moment of silence to honor the fallen of the Massacre at Glencoe 317 years ago today (1692), the MacDonalds of Glencoe.

Mac lies buried but not forgot,
God's rest given early not sorely sought,
Freedom's price costly blood paid and bought
Nay never say ever they fought for naught.

    How did I miss this?

I gotta get a better calendar.

And for your consideration, a shot of myself in front of the Glencoe memorial on a cold, snowy/rainy/sleety day back in 2007.

And proudly wearing the MacDonald colors at that.

    For sure....so sad.

Here's a great rememberance ceremony link

Its Glencoe, Oregon - but still well done and most touching.

I am not trying to cause offence to any one, particularly the MacDonald clan, and I am not in any way belittling the dastardly deed of the massacre of Glencoe. But as Scots massacre's go, this was hardly a major event and there was just as much betrayal, skulduggery, hate and misery in these other dreadful episodes too, yet we do not seem to remember the other terrible events that happened here in the same way, or, if at all.Ever since I was a wee lad, I have never understood why?

In the same vein, in no way would I wish to belittle the many other "dastardly deeds" you describe in Scots history. Many clans may have their own "Glencoe" type story to tell. Those who wish to remember them may do so at will and in their own way with pride. But that will never diminish the treachery of the events of Feb 13, 1692 as they relate to the MacDonald clan, the crown, and to the Scots in general. Or the desire of those with MacDonald blood in their veins or sympathy in their hearts to memorialize the event and their fallen kin.

I have no wish to be contentious, only honest, and I respect what you say totally, but there is a but. I use this as an example, not a criticism. Why do the MacDonalds not commemorate the suffocating of some 400 of their clansmen, women and children in a cave by the MacLeods? As far as I am aware no one does. I am sorry to say and I really am,that I have more than a suspicion that opportunistic political capital and propaganda,by some, has been made of the massacre of the poor souls of Glencoe. As I say, other massacres of far greater proportions, whilst not forgotten, are in a much lower profile. Please understand that I make no excuses for those involved in the massacre of Glencoe ,or, anywhere else. I write this with the greatest repect to all and out of respect I will say no more on this sad and awful subject. Jock
