A moment when I wished I'd been kilted

Just back from holiday in the Scottish Highlands where I wore a kilt every day for all or part of the day. Never received a single comment while kilted BUT I wore shorts for the earlier part of a day in Fort William due to walking over rough and muddy ground. Returning to my car I became aware of a middle aged man wearing glasses and standing at the door of the car next to mine who was staring at me as I walked towards my car. As I was parked next to him I had to walk right up to him to the point where he had to speak. "I'm curious," he said, "are you a man or a woman?" I explained that I was wearing shorts because I had been hiking, and the deepness of my voice as I spoke answered his question. So in future I'll be wearing kilts more often as a clear statement of manhood. I can well do without wearing unisex clothes such as trousers and shorts which leave folk in doubt.

Sounds like he needs to check his glasses are still adequate for his needs

I would be scared to share the road if his sight is that bad! He would probably have mistaken a kilt for a skirt too!

But of course it's still good to wear a kilt whenever possible anyway.

Ouch!... I must presume from the nature of the exchange that the man was not in trousers!

    cessna,

Sounds like this gentleman was wearing a kilt. Don't know how you feel about contemporary or non-traditional types, but the Buzz Kidder canvas kilts are 10 oz. army duck, and made in the traditional style. Pretty rugged stuff for hiking, and machine washable. Also Utilikilt Workman's are very rugged (12 oz cotton duck) and washable. Just a few suggestions for sticking with a kilt while hiking.

Actually he was wearing a scruffy pair of trousers. As P1M said my muckle bushy sidebreezers should have been obvious enough so I assumed the guy had chronically bad eyesight and gave him the benefit of the doubt that his enquiry was genuine rather than intended to be insulting. Unlike trousers or shorts which look much the same on man or woman, I don't think anyone could mistake a man's kilt for a woman's skirt as I always wear a sporran and, with the exception of lightweight polycotton kilts, a kilt has its own distinctive swing which is obvious when someone is walking towards you.

Interesting. Hmm? More reason and impetus for me to continue doing exactly as I've done so much in kilt wearing. That is wear my kilt.
