    At The Museum

I am a volunteer at the Auburn, Cord, Duesenburg Automotive Museum in Auburn, IN. I volunteer there as a gallrey host and docent plus other odd jobs. There is a dress code when I am a gallery host or docent so no kilt then. Every month there is a volunteer meeting and I usually wear a kilt to the meeting. Also, if I am there 'off of the clock' I am in a kilt. Well, yesterday was a specail Halloween event for children and all of the volunteers were asked to 'dres up' for the occation. Well, my version of 'dress up' was to work at the museum and wear a kilt. I wore my wool Black Watch with flashes and a white Oxford shirt. The best comment that I had was from another volunteer who is used to seeing me in a kilt. When she saw me arrive she laughed and said' "where is your costume"? I love it.

That's great! How'd anyone else react to it?

I'm jealous as H**L of your being able to Docent at the ACD Museum. It's one of my favorite places in the world.
I too am a Docent. At the Royal British Columbia Museum. Luckily our dress code is "Smart Casual" so I wear the Kilt all the time. Every comment I have ever received has been positive. The Guests seem to love it and the staff know it is part of my business..
Even the CEO of the museum has commented and approved of how sharp I look.
With Canada's pride in cultural diversity I often make the joke while in the Native Pole Gallery "Does anyone see anything strange here? A former American, in a Scottish Kilt, speaking about First Peoples. How Canadian is that?"

If I ever get back to your part of the world I'll have to ask for a reciprocal "Behind the scenes" tour. A '36 dual cowl Phaeton Duesy is my dream. My brother has a '38 Cord he found in a farmer's field that is all original except for paint, tires and rubber weatherstripping, it had 899 miles on it when he found it. It is 80% restored and he drives it regularly.

Well, I was working at a game for the children and the crowd was flowing through fast. No one ever spoke to me directly, but I did hear one parent explaining my kilt to their child.

I would be honored to be your personal docent.

Their is a lot of Auburn and Cord support in Auburn.

The director of the place is a friend of mine and he has transformed the museum during his 15 year tenure. This week he is at Duesenburg rally where he is driving a Duesenburg from Sacramento to Monterrey, CA. (what a life) The museum owns a Duesenburg that has over 250,000 miles!! His 14 year old daughter is a major old car nut and she is not afraid of the grease and oil. Three weeks ago she just purchased her first car... a 1967 Mercedes 250S.

I remember when Domino's Deusy came up for sale, oh 20 years ago. I almost bought it. Of course I was just a tad short of the asking price.

Possibly straying off topic, I'll try to bring it back. I work a car auction each year during the Monterey car week; for the past two years, I have worn a kilt to the after auction dinner party(I know, no pics, it didn't happen). The head of the auction house thought it was great, told me he had a Black Watch.

Spending a week around those old and exotic cars is one of the best parts of my job.

How far away is the museum from its billboard on I-69? I pass it on my frequent trips from Carmel to Fort Wayne, and always thought about stopping in. I'm not much of a car guy, but I'm a big museum buff, and I'll be going up to Fort Wayne on Thursday and coming back on Saturday- so if you're working either of those days and it's not TOO far from I-69, I might swing by.

I am not sure where the billboard is in I-69. I come into Auburn from the other side. From the exit for 8 it is about a two mile drive through town. Just look for the signs that will lead you there.
