    my nephew

OK guys, help me out. My favorite nephew (Dirka’s cousin, not brother) wants a kilt. He is currently in culinary school on the east side of the state near the Smoky Mountains. He will come home for his birthday in early September so I have some time. I know he will want the Wallace tartan. What colour kilt hose go with that much red? I am leaning to oatmeal. I’d love Hamish’s opinion on this.

    Dirk,

Sadly Hamish is still incomunicado (computer problems) at the moment.

I'll bet he would be happy with the idea of oatmeal hose though.

By the by, are you a cool uncle or what?

    Cheers

Oatmeal for a contrast, but if you want to keep it dark then make it a blue or green. with the other for the flashes. (red blue green go well together I think.)

My Livingston tartan is also very red along with some green and a very little black. I use bottle green hose to match the green in the tartan with a green Jacobite shirt, black with a black shirt/sweater, off white for more formal of course. I need to get my hands on a pair of oatmeal and see what they look like with it.

Wallace has red, black and yellow. Remembering the "hose matches the shirt" axiom, here's what I do with my Wallace kilt:

    Dressy:
Black hose, red flashes, black shirt
Oatmeal hose, black flashes, oatmeal shirt
Tan hose, red flashes, tan shirt

    Casual:
Gray hiking socks scrunched down, gray, black, or yellow shirt
White hiking socks scrunched down, white t-shirt with some red and/or black decoration

Green does work with black, red, and yellow, but I avoid it. Wallace is a bold, strong pattern and I don't think it lends itself to adding too many additional colors, even if they do "go".

I always check the color wheel, to see what compliments the colors. Just me however.

What a joy to have a nephew Kilted, just wish that I could get one of my nephews Kilted anyone of them and I would be happy.

I tend to like Tartan Hiker's comments on this thread...

But what I really want to ask is, "Hey, do you need any more nephews? I'd be willing to train up for the job..."
