Need kilt help

What a better place to start, right?

I'm trying to find the right tartan for my husband, he's planning to start competing in Highland Games and we need to order a kilt. The family name has been traced back to the Angus district, but there is no Clan or Sept to associate it to that I can find so far.

If we can't find the appropriate tartan, is there a "generic" tartan he can wear?

There a bunch of generic Tartans:

- Hunting Stewart
- Blackwatch
- Pride of Scotland
- Flower of Scotland
- Black ShadownTartan from Stillwater kilts

There's a district tartan for Angus. It looks to be a very nice one as well. Check out the tartan finder on houseoftartan.com to see it. As far as a "generic" tartan, although not a term I would use, Black Watch (AKA government sett) is often considered a universal tartan. Personally, I choose a tartan for what it looks like most of the time. (Although I will admit I really do want to get a kilt in my clan tartan someday.)

I don't compete in Highland Games nor do I play one on TV but I'd recommend Sport Kilt, USA Kilts or Canadian Casual Kilts for affordable WASHABLE kilts.

Thank you all for the replies. There are no sept or clan matches and it was only from a local Scottish festival one year that we found a connnection to Angus.

We have looked at the Sportkilt site, but me being a stickler for detail, wanted to find the most appropriate pattern for his hertiage. That overrides the "girly" part of just wanting to find the neatest looking pattern

Nothing wrong with the Angus district tartan. It's available from any reputable kilt maker and if his family is from the region has a good connection to his heritage.

For competing, I use a SWK economy in a Gordon or a sport kilt in the black Stewart. His kilt will get dirty and beat up so keep that in mind. Other than that I'd recommend the Blackwatch or the Stewart (Royal or Black).
